Daniel, stay safe out there man. Enjoyed that immensely. You ARE on the cutting edge of an already dangerous profession. Keep them chips flying and keep that bump on your shoulders in fine tune. More power to you.

ps: you take flak well too.

Re: throwing 20\" diameter pine top, over 22\'

From the video I can't figure out it wasn't just felled in the same direction the top went down?

Re: throwing 20\" diameter pine top, over 22\'

Guy wires from a pole, I was thinking the same thing but no clear path to fell it the direction the top went. You can see it at the beginning somewhere.

Re: throwing 20\" diameter pine top, over 22\'

good eyes Jeff...

That was a big concern.. wouldn't want to find out what it costs to replace a pole...

And I wasn't about to slam anything through that hedge.. that's probably a 20 million dollar estate. Nor would I have wanted to come across the driveway without a lot more protection than was on site...

They never ask me for prices anymore. They just pay the bill when it comes.. So why would I?

What's going on up in MA?.. we're slammed here... and we didn't even get much wind..

20 million dollar estate . Don't ask you what it cost ? My shovel handle is only four feet . How deep do I have to dig for this one ? Oh my ................. Smell that....sounds like it , smells like it, it is it !WHEW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: throwing 20\" diameter pine top, over 22\'

I've said it before, liars and story tellers LOVE to put numbers in their stories. Especially if it's a interesting number, like 113, instead of 100.

Last year a peice of crap tree service told me, "yeah, our climber just did crane job number 1553", and was flat out trying to get me to believe it or believed it himself. I didn't ask for it, I didn't even wonder. He just blurted it out from no where.

I laughed when i got off the phone. Then pulled out the calculator.

I see or hear about them renting a crane maybe 3 times a year. Worst case, if I'm wrong, no way they do more than 15 maximum crane removal jobs in a year, (but i seriously think it's about 3). 15 a year, that equals 129 years that climber has been doing crane removals.

Oh yeah and without asking, I'm constantly told their climber is the best climber around....

Maybe when someone feels inferior.... they have to come out and state big claims or something, to try and believe they are much better? I don't understand.

I've got a few tapes from Riggs...whew...there aren't any trees like those in Minneapolis. I'm anxious to see them up on the web!

Re: throwing 20\" diameter pine top, over 22\'

mad respect Riggs!
Ill agree w one thing!! i have 27 years in.I spent so much time working that there is not a lot of video or photo records of the work....what ya gonna do?! ya keep on keepin on....lots of people do not really know what i am capable of? i dont say much about myself it just always felt creepy to me to say, i did this or that! I do LOVE sharing and listening to stories of the guys like yourself who grasp our rich history!!!!
look forward to seeing you some point soon!

Re: throwing 20\" diameter pine top, over 22\'

Riggs,
You're FOS.. use that shovel on your own pile.. You call me up, all hammered, and tell me 5 times that the throw was cool, then bust it on TB... All drunk and rambling on, I had to hang up on you..

You've never seen a big top thrown that far... no Bryn Mawr boy has, and that's all you are..

bring it.. don't sing it! Put up the vids..

Re: throwing 20\" diameter pine top, over 22\'

Maybe it's just me, but I don't get any special swagger in my step thinking about throwing tree tops...

with a few million in the estate, it seems they could have afforded the necessary crane/ground protection.

i still think the whole "throwing the top" approach a bit on the reckless side...

btw, didn't see the pole in the way.
