This Truck Kicks!!!

I have thought about that. I have this idea. The attachment is self explanatory. I think it is a cheap solution. However, I know it takes away holding capacity.

I would consider under bed boxes instead. If you are going to lose bed capacity you might as well shorten up the bed to lighten up the load on the truck. The removed section of the dump bed would be much heavier than a behind the cab tool box. With any luck some of the removed bed could be used to build the chip box. I've seen separate 'man cabs' for sale cheap that may work well for a tool box. I think you will tire of your tool box tipping each time you dump chips.

Your four foot tall sides are not tall enough for a good chip box and by the time you increase the height you are going to have a much larger chip capacity than the truck is designed to carry. I've heard 500lbs. per cu. yard for chip weight estimations.

The saw mill where I take logs wants them 17' 8". Consider what you will do with logs before you shorten up the bed.

I think you got a really nice truck for your money.

Good points. And I will consider them.

I especially like the idea of cutting the bed and putting the "man cab" on.

Thanks.
Where is your mini skid going to ride?

The boxes I have seen made are fixed to the frame and do not lift up with the dump bed. I am not sure I have seen any gear boxes that lift with the dump bed other than the length wise pole pruner compartments. My Fuso has a 14' bed and I would lose 2' that to get a tool box. The dream would be to have the whole dump bed done in aluminum but that runs around 17 grand.

You shuold be able to find a used set of L-tool cabinets. the advantage of these is that they sit directly on the frame and you don't lose capacity to the larger frame rails on the dump box.

Using the cab for gear storage is a good idea but be sure to capture the gear with solid doors. Be aware of UFOs in the cab...Unfastened Flying Objects. We're all seen what happens in a car crash...projectiles hitting people in the passenger compartment...very messy.

Nice truck!

looks like theres space between the cab and dump body for a slim line box,ive mine there bolted to the dump bin so if i need to get at anything underneath its easy, just have to rember to have the fuel/oil containers closed.a no brainer really.

Its GVW is 18k but has air brakes? So do you still need an air brake endorsement for it?

We have a 15,000 lb winch truck with air brakes so I have checked with dot and the state. The answer from both is "CDL endorsements are for CDL vehicles only so it's not required. So the feds don't care. As laws vary state to state I'd be sure to check with your state transportation department.

Yes you do need the endorsement in Colorado- I have a truck that is under cdl weight with air brakes and had to get it. But hey look at the bright side- I have driven commercial vehicles here for 15 years and NEVER been stopped or had my licence checked.

notahacker, i did/am doing just what you posted for boxes on my truck. its a lot cheaper that way rather than cutting the box. i am building a saw rack for it so the saw dont roll around when i dump
