This one makes me angry

EZ-P, i completely agree with everything that you have stated, and despite what hippies will have you believe, there are plenty of trees left in this world, trust me. Also, we all know that the chinese are the best tree jumpers;this is because every tree jump they make is for china, not themselves, and the sooner you can deal with that stephan, the sooner we'll see eye to eye on this whole "tree jumping" rigamoran.

I'm confused, T.R.

First you say you agree with me, which is cool.

Then you start talking about Chinese Tree Jumpers, as if there are any trees in China to jump with.

I just don't get you, T.R.

Can we see eye to eye? Can we?

As TR has left, I might proxy for him:

I believe the Magic part refers to his ability to support both sides of any issue. As soon as you think you have him....he's gone. Magic Marmot, the B side.

I train with an ice pick because it is more difficult, and it makes me better with an ice axe when it is time to shine on the tree jumping stage.

Stupid old man.

At one point cutting a tree at a node was considered strange. "Why not just cut it flush with the tree?" or even questions such as "What is a node?" were stated in the past. Now pruning at a node and not cutting into the trunk wood or parent material is the correct way of pruning. Why do we prune at a node?--because that is the place that the tree will "self prune".

So why not mimic nature once more. Of course, there would be a need for more studies, and a correct place to have this type of cutting situation. Maybe in a conservation or stream or wetland restoration project, but not in a front yard where there are targets.

Neville Fay (author) does cite some good references. I would like to see/read some more research on this. Besides, "bad" cuts mean repeat business and/or continuous monitoring.

Vince, I hear you. I know that deadwood is good for other organisms. I know that dead/decaying material is important in forest ecosystems. I'm all for it. I just am wary of those people who seem to have an agenda and support this agenda with their own non-peer reviewed research. We had this discussion back in November concerning coronet cuts. I have to disagree that the goal of correct pruning is to mimic nature. Not all trees self prune, yet we still prune those trees. Ensuring the safe and healthy interaction of people and trees should be a primary goal of an arborist. I have yet to see any other substantial arguement for leaving deadwood in trees other than "other organisms will use it." Sure they will. That has a place in a natural area, not in a street tree.

Go Chinese Tree Jumping Team.

Alot of you guys have very valid points and i did over react a little bit. We work so hard to preserve tree i get a little cranky. That and since i quit smoking things tend to get under my skin a little more. No more instant releif. I should have titled it "this makes me irritated" or something to that effect. Also when i was driving home before i posted this i did see some really bad hacking and slashing. Kind of leaving full spars on the side of the road kind of thing.

Nah Jman, you were right the first time. If I had walked up on that in the woods I would have been pissed.

So called outdoors people who don't respect nature are tedious at best.

Then don't sharpen it you little pussy. It's even more difficult when the point is dull.

K,
I missed the conversation in November. Was it on the Buzz? I would enjoy reading the old thread.

And I agree with you that this type of cutting is not for street trees or any tree/place that have potential targets. But for me, it is interesting research for the potential use in restoration projects. Just more stuff for me to read. Kindof like the Buzz.

True.
The "ice axe" you show is a mountaineering axe or "piolet". Although "pick" is the proper term for the front of the piolet. The flat rear is an adze.
The mountaineering axe is used singly as a combination walking stick/slide arrester/climbing tool.
Refer to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ice_axe
http://www.goxplore.net/guides/Ice_Axe

The Norwegians are using technical ice tools, which are paired. Usually one has an adze rear and the other has a hammer head rear. More recently though, ice climbers have been "going leashless" and using just two hammer-back tools.

A few years ago, Petzl made this cool video about thier new NOMIC tech axe. Try to ignore the crazy eyebrows ... if you can.

Ain't that the truth and there is no comparison to Cornet cuts and this. I have seen that practice first hand and the the great results because of it. Even if the results were poor it is in the betterment of tree care we try these things. That is a different topic all together

The cornet cuts seem intresting but in the world of urban tree care I don't see them having much of a life but if someone can show some good evidence I'm down for trying them. If people will have thier trees topped I think we can sell them cornet cuts. Now if they have a uses is another story. I'll have to look up that thread to bring myself up to speed.

There is something very suspect about anyone who uses Rage against the Machine as a soundtrack to their video.

Kinda like...'Hey everyone!!look at us We're rebel teens!!

Suppose everyone's gotta go through some kind of adolescent weirding out phase? These day it seems like many people are stuck in it well into their 30s, Easy P for instance...

I hope to God this doesn't mean we're gonna have to listen to Rage against the machine at the CAA TCC. That would just kill my record breaking Pink Floyd groove.
