this is what happens when you tip tie a large vertical limb

I spent many years working for others. The only time I ever said no to a boss was after I buried a falling axe into my own scalp at 140 ft. (true story).

I think Corey is a great guy. He just started climbing not really that long ago. He has shown his days in the biz both good and bad. I think he is going to be really good one day.

Its easy for us to bash this guy for his obvious egotistical need to be seen, but this particular incident does happen more often than people will admit. I've done this very thing but with smaller material and the results were not potentially deadly but...I learned and moved on to respect mass and rotation. This same thing could involve swinging a limb into 3 phase power lines with disastrous consequence! Guys like this strangely contribute to safety by virtue of their own misfortune. However, I ask myself how he remains in business? Doesn't WCB or his insurance provider see these videos? If he was working in British Columbia I highly doubt he would be for long with all the evidence of incompetence. He may well be a nice guy, but he is very dangerous and if I was in his employ I would seriously be looking for another job!

Yes, I like him because he just started. He dose not hold ANYTHING back. Totally honest and great person as far as I know from his videos. He is trying. Damn dude is lucky to be able to keep going.....Respect. Just My Two Cents.

I am beginning to seriously question the merits of certification? Assuming he has any? I have always held the belief that training should come in the field, from the ground and be done by guys with years of experience actively doing the work, not instructors in an office teaching from a book. When the Workers Comp Board decided to have a chainsaw safety course for workers employed in the bush I was amazed at how rudimentary it was. They effectively certified people with little or no experience to operate a chainsaw and fell trees within the scope of their duties? To qualify they simply had to demonstrate starting the saw on the ground and fell a tree using either a Humbolt cut or a conventional cut. And some didn't have time but passed anyway? A permit to kill or seriously injure yourself! Even after certification, it only prepares you begin learning and hopefully continue learning for years to come. When the learning stops it's time to find a new job or hopefully retire!

You live in a different world sir. Totally hear you. He seems to be around the right people now. That video was very early with other people. Dude has came a long way from that. Even the fall. Like I said though you live in a different world.

I wish him well, and I do appreciate the pride he had to swallow posting those videos. Hard lessons for sure.

I was amazed to find out that he had just started when Some of his videos were posted he really seemed like he had a good bit more experience.

So hes definitely picked up a lot faster the most which is maybe due to the amount of information out on the Internet these days. Maybe he has some good guys in his company.

He's got a lot of Passion & a pretty good amount of knowledge, and obviously a great physical body, So he definitely has a lot of potential: it's just the safety awareness and mentality that had me concerned.

There's a mathematical relationship in this business between the amount of close calls, near misses, small mishaps, minor injuries / mistakes/minor damage to property etc... and a major injury or fatality. you only get so many of the small ones (call them warnings) before something big goes wrong. That's why I take every little screw up seriously. It's a sign that there is a problem that needs to be fixed.

Yes precisely! Bravado and ego can be extremely dangerous in this business. Can’t say how many times I here clients say stuff like “ the last guy I hired was like a monkey jumping from tree to tree”, my response is usually he won’t last long. I’m one of the only guys in this area that isn’t dead or injured at 54 because I got out of logging for one thing! The industry around here is rife with weed smoking maniacs! Because I prefer to learn from others mistakes than make my own.

Friend, if the only drug they're doing on job is smoking weed, they're downright exceptional around these parts. I'm talking flask-on-saddle, shooting up behind the customer's shed type guys... Arkansas is kind of fucked up. There's getting to be more decent companies, but the change is slow.

Wow! Shooting up?! That better be insulin! And I can’t imagin working in a tree drunk would be very effective or safe!

The industry is shifting, but you'll never find a place where people who drop out of high school can be making $20 an hour in just a few years years if they have balls that doesn't have hard drug issues.
Seems that climbers tend to need extreme circumstances to get their kicks, and once tree climbing loses its exhilaration, they find new things to provide that rush.

Better to learn from the mistakes of others than make the same ones yourself.
There is great value in the tree blooper reel. Especially the hi-def vids with multiple camera angles and commentary. I watch so i can see the mistakes, if they arent edited out, and little things because if you want to be good you have to be able to see the future. No room for trial and error.
