Theives! (again)

Today it was "just" a couple of saddles. Let's see . . . sierra moreno ultralight, $250. Buckingham master II $225. a dozen autolockers $240. microcender $55 2-in-1 lanyard $50 3 micropulleys $60 30-ft Fly (lanyard) $25 6 feet HRC $12 cell phone holder $15 chainsaw hook for saddle $15 custom-made ditty pouch $5 (plus labor) two silky zubats/sheaths $125 3 keychain biners $3

I figure this one cost me about $300 more than when they got two chainsaws and a blower out of my truck. Not to mention it kept me from finishing the job after lunch, putting me another day behind on getting paid and on to the next job.

Someone needs to develop a micro lo-jack system so we can start setting up traps for these mofos.

Oh, well, I was thinking about a new saddle anyway, and they left two $60 climbing helmets, two ropes, and the four biners & 2 split tails that were attached. Could have been worse.

So sorry to hear that man. AAAARRRRGGGGHHH!
Just remember...Karma is a B! THey'll get what's coming
to them. Who knows when, but they will get it.

This might work some day.

Check out the RFID technology. Heck, if we can put this into an animal, human, or consumer products; we may someday be able to protect our gear.

Keith,

I remember the first time you got stolen from. It makes me suspicious that you got hit again so soon. Is there anyone you can think of that might have done this too you? Some one might be doing this out of spite. Anyway, I hope justice can be served. [use a better word] theives! /forum/images/graemlins/furious3.gif

I was trying to say B A S T A R D theives! (See my last post above). I don't think that word is that bad, do you guys? It just means a child born out of wedlock. Not too bad.

The server automatically took out my word and put in there "use a better word." The server cannot recoginze swear words if you put a space between the letters! HA! I broke the code. /forum/images/graemlins/beerchug.gif

Dang Keith, how did it happen?? I always thought Austin was safe. The only thing I ever had stolen was a blower and like most thefts, it was an inside job.

Please expound on that? What, no locks?

We came down for lunch, dropped our saddles to our ankles, stepped out, and left them there for an hour while we went to eat. They were at the top of a small rise (above street grade) in the client's yard, near the house, behind some landscaping--not very visible. It was kind of a busy neighborhood street (Nathan--it was Bouldin st, south of Palmer auditorium), but there were plenty of pedestrian neighbors passing by and some I'd seen in their yards several times, so I thought leaving the gear was pretty safe (some neighbors were sympathetic, but didn't see anything). I've done this exact same thing hundreds, if not thousands of times before. They picked up our helmets off the saddles and dropped them back in the yard so they could steal the saddles (and my handsaw, which wasn't connected cuz i wear it on my leg). They left our ropes hanging and the biners/tails that were attached. But they opened the back of the chipper (giving them access to a plastic tarp, which they declined to take).

I'm thinking they'd seen us working there over several days, saw my truck gone but the ropes still there, and made a quick grab of whatever looked easy (guess they were too cool for helmets). I'm really surprised about the chipper door, though--that thing doesn't come open real easy, and makes a lot of noise. Maybe one guy checked there while the other grabbed the belts.

Some people would say that's what I get for leaving stuff out, but that's bullshit, IMO. This is not "finder's keepers" territory; they knew whose stuff it was, and that it was not lost or abandoned. Of course, I will now have to think three times before doing the same thing again, since I can't afford to take a chance on losing another set of gear.

What next? do I have to start pulling my rope every time I take a lunch break?

Don't mean to cry, just had to blow off some steam. be careful out there!

That royally sucks Keith. I think most of us have left our gear like that on lunch break fully expecting it to be there when we return.

I used to live on a side street off of Bouldin and always considered it a very safe neighborhood. Of course, this was several years ago.

Being I try to stay away from the big city as much as possible, I'll just remember to look at who's wearing what out my way. I wrote down on a sticky note your gear. There's only one other climber out this way - if we can call him that - but several small outfits that I know have been too interested in my chipper. If they suddenly find it possible to climb, I'll scope them out. Sorry Keith, know it's a bitch.

B A St Ards is right lets see now it was Mark C a little while back, then Mike Poor, now you, we lost a brand new carlton junior new years, thieves suck, left my gear at lunch many times - that's real low they must of watched you pull away @#%$@!!!

I've had an 020 and blower flogged out the back of the ute whilst we were working around the back. A lot of times now I take the gear around the back and leave it there or lock it up in the cab.

It's a PITA having to move everything all the time but has become part of the job ...

... it's the bottom of the barrel to flog a workers tools, scum bags.

Shame

Checked the local news in Austin. I suppose it is little consolation to know that it is ranked as the 3rd safest city.

Saw that. It was based more on violent crime. I must admit, I'd rather lose my harness than my life. Austin is still a nice place to be. Besides, the [use a better word] thieves are everywhere.

edit: funny, I was going to let the software fill in the above censorship msg in the earlier post when I wrote "bullshit," but that flew right on by. I never would have thought more people would be offended by b astard than bs.

Dang, no one would leave gear out on the East side but Bouldin is a "nice" street. Whenever I leave a rope up over lunch I feel like its a big bright flag that says, "free gear behind these bushes!" I usually leave the ropes up and put everything else in my van.
