So I got a pair of saws to work on, both were more work than client wanted so gave them to me. One was a decades'-old poulan 25d-type (and I already have one, so finally - hopefully - will get one to work!) But the other almost went right into the bin, some "Craftsman 42cc" with rotten fuel lines..I put it aside thinking I'd take the bar, at least.
I got to taking its bar off, I remove the "by-hand chain tensioner" clutch covering and something's real familiar.....I notice its muffler and start looking and realize it's like 95%+ same parts as my Poulan Pro pp4218a (which seems quite a popular saw)
Are there other models, or just the poulan and the craftsman? Am guessing there's gotta be more....am **reallllly** hoping there's a Husqvarna model equivalent (hell my pp4218a has Husqy-stamped parts inside it), I spent over a year with some ebay $135 clone saw (of zenoah g2500) before finding there was also the Husqvarna 425 (IIRC) that was also 95% the same.....so am expecting other saws share this 'chassis'/engine/form and hoping for whatever info can be provided
Specific thoughts/Q's:
- Have been eager to try advanced timing on a saw, always afraid to though (I am good w/ my [very thorough]grinding kit!), but so far as I can see I now have "a spare flywheel" to test
- Similar/ditto on the desire to try portwork...I'm good at fine grinding work but, again, never wanted to risk a saw (and suspect it's only worthwhile on larger displacement units, barely even for a 42cc) but now since I have extra jug I can do it with impunity (would also be my first full tear-down, since IIRC that is requisite for port work?)
- Any general tips on this platform would be appreciated, I love the thing I got it years ago for $50 at a pawn and it's been a workhorse since, has modded airbox and totally gutted muffler, run & treated well, it's "broken in nicely" and rips it still can run circles around my modded 355t, so am very stoked to modify on this platform further -- any advice for this would be appreciated!
I'm looking to grab the 60cc echo 590 (or 620p if I can find a good price) when I have to but for a couple years this thing has served me well, now that I have a full "donor saw" I want to experiment, I think the timing advance, at minimum, is worthy (recommendations on degrees? Have heard 8deg for my 355T, which I'll probably end up doing if doing it to the 4218 shows improvement in cut-speed!)
