The Hitch Hiker

On the original subject of the HH, I wish one of the vendors that sells HH's would prefab a compact stiffish loop (for advancement while ascending) to sell along with the HH itself.

I have built some diy versions with wire, cord, etc, but to be honest if someone sold a simple version (compact, that would stay in place) for a reasonable price, I'd go that route.

Maybe just a simple stiff cord loop with sewn "eyes". Not life support so can be minimal.

I don't mind splicing my ropes, slings, etc, but with free time so short I would rather not mess around with recreating the wheel for that one unsophisticated application. And production would be far simpler for someone building a bunch of them.

Too many things I am already not getting to. And on top of that I manage to drop (and lose) my favorite wire loop at 200ft above the forest floor recently. I don't want to admit how much time I had into bending the stiffish wire to the shape I wanted....

Note: I do not feel the same way about working on ones own friciton savers, RW stiffies, etc. These sort of things are highly personal and esp when no commercial product suits one's needs, it is well spent time to create one's own.

Somewhere on this thread there is a photo showing the two options for tying stopper knots that work with the HH.
I can't find them again so if someone knows where they are or could post them again here I'd appreciate it.
Thanks.

Like so, don't even need the webbing sleeve on it, can be just the tech cord sewn. Would be really easy for the folks with the rope sewing machines to set up. What I would do now is put the lighter weight shrink tubing on it instead of the webbing and shrink it in place to "capture" the "U" shape permanently. I'll build one to verify the design. I think I can make them pretty fast now. I'll verify that too.

Mine made of out of tech cord and electrical tape is still going strong. It looks just like AJ's but not near as nice.

Yep, the best simple yet effective solution is more like yours, just put shrink tube over one layer electrical tape and do 5 rows of stitching per eye (before it's taped and tubed) and it's good to go, stays neat looking and will last.

That's a great idea moss. Do you have any reservations if I try to recreate that concept on the ol' industrial sew machine?

Are you kidding? Of course not! Open source brainstorming, I'm not putting my hand-made stuff in production, would love to see what you come up with. Goal here is to solve some of these "little" problems and make it available to as many people who like the solution.

Very cool!

Sewed up a sample on some 1/4" sterling powercord and then heat-shrunk it into shape. Just handed it off for testing, but seems like a pretty sweet design. If our head arborist doesn't break it too bad in the testing process I'll post some pictures

Make sure it is short enough that it CANNOT go over the top of the spine on the HH. If it does it can cause the HH to not function and cause catastrophic failure.

We just sewed two eyes, like a tiny stiffy but without the middle stitching. That way, the glue held perfectly when folded over. Seems to hold its shape well but is mailable enough that getting it on and off the biner isn't an issue.

That white tape makes it look like a tiny corset, moss!

Yeah, I was tired and I forgot to stop stitching through the middle ;-) Sewing is too addictive, don't know when to stop. Better no stitching at the bend. Working on a more simple version. Haha, definitely kinky appeal to stitching white vinyl tape ;-)

As much as I like the HH for srt, I really don't understand why a couple people say they think the HH is the ideal lanyard adjuster.

I have tried it for that out of curiousity, but I don't see where it adds anything to a nice compact hitch cord with some sort of take up pulley.

Not dissing the HH, just not seeing why someone would prefer the HH as a lanyard adjuster.

What am I missing?

One advantage would be if you have say a longer lanyard, like 20-25', you could cinch it and use it SRT with the HH. I use my lanyard SRT quite a bit, just with a hitch though, which is not a problem for short moves up or down. It is a pretty big chunk of gear compared to a hitch for a lanyard adjuster.

I see no advantage using a HH on a lanyard and if the SRT option is desirable on a long lanyard, as it is for me, use a Trango Cinch as it works perfectly and is lighter and cheaper than a HH.
HH stays on my main line forever!
