The Geek Squad

Anyone ever use the Geek Squad, or any type of computer professional, to make some improvments on your computer?

Though I have saved the money to buy a Mac, I've got some expenses that are holding me back from out right buying a Mac at the moment.

So, I have some ideas: buy a new PC (ridiculously cheap) or have a geek squad guy/gal work on mine.

What would you all do?

Lots to consider. Computer age, processor speed, ram, and hard drive space, as well as the operating system. If the system is more than a couple years old, you may well be better off with an inexpensive new computer, while you're saving for your mac.

Consumer Reports evaluated Geek Squad type providers, in their June 07 issue. They rated slightly higher than manufacturer support, but they are spendy. As an aside. In a former life, I worked for a company that guaranteed payments taken by Geek Squad, and we saw an awful lot of disputes and disssatisfied clients, so if you elect to go with them, I'd suggest paying by credit card, so that you have recourse through the credit card dispute system, in the event you don't get the results you're looking for.

If you'd like to see the Consumer Reports article, message me and I can scan it and email it to you.

Got to Micro Center and see if they have any 'open box' or returns. check the Mac website for the same!

You can get huge discounts with the same factory warranty. The money you think that you save by patching the PC will be used up in non-productive time.

Thanks Tom & Richard. Good tips.

I went to Staples to shop last night. I didn't buy anything last night, but I'm going later today.

I found this laptop for $699.

I'm pretty sure I'm going to get this. Even though I have the cash for a Mac, I've got a visibility screen (fence) issue with the county I live in.

Since I do business on my property, I've been having to jump through hoops to remain doing business from my home. So, I've got thousands of dollars to put into a fence...

I've got 1.33 acres to fence.

What do you all think? I don't think this is such a bad plan for the moment...

If you're going to spend that much on a pc machine, Jamin, I'd get a mac. I took Tom's good advice at the beginning of the year, and bought mine, and I haven't regretted the decision.

well look at it as buying a tool? would you spend $400 on an echo saw or would you spend a little more for a sthil?

my brother got onto mac about five years ago...thanks jim!

here's his way of justifying the price difference.

find the pc and mac that do what you need. the mac will cost more, no doubt.

choose the pc but put the 'savings' in the cookie jar.

then, pay yourself back at groudie or even minimum wage whenever you have to hassle with some pc incompatibility or virus.

quickly the cookie jar would be empty

in the tears of mac the only problem i've had is after i dropped my macbook off the desk onto the corner of the opened screen. jim did a repair but found that it was better to get a new macbook. hardly a mac issue. but!!! the reason it fell was that my foot snagged the power cord. now, the power cord is held in place by a magnet. my cats have snagged the cord out but the computer doesn't move.

buy the stihl...er...mac :)

Our son is better than most Geek Squad guys. And he's always been a PC guy, because no matter how good a MAC was, there was much that it did not have a club membership too. But he's very impressed with Macs now. And told my wife to get a Mac laptop.

Although, she did need to use my PC today, because her Mac and browser were not able to access a certain website properly.

You can get a fairly nice Mac new for about $1700 can't you?

I know that a dynamite computer PC can be built for about $1000.

And there is okay stuff in the $700 range ready-packaged.

Also, looked at that Dell that you mentioned, although it was $798.00 at the link you supplied. Thought about comparing with Costco Online? Costco had a comparable Dell for a $100 more with Blu Ray and a 9 cell battery rather than 6 cell. So similar, but different.

Oh ... Bestbuy ...

Best Buy Dell 640 Gig HD with 6 Gig of RAM

At slightly over $800, just a tad bit more than the one in your link. And that one has 6 Gigs of RAM and a 640 Hard Drive.
