Techs, Judges, and Volunteers

Well Paul I am looking forward to seeing everyone there and seeing what Kentucky has for climbers. I know some of the guys from surround states but don't know anyone from Kentucky.

The KAA TCC will take place at Moreland Park in Owensboro, KY on October 14th. In case of rain the event will be rescheduled for Octover 28th.

Set up for the TCC will be on the 13th. Jeff Holder (the TCC chair) would like all volunteers involved with set up to be in Owensboro on the evening of the 12th so that we can get an early start on the 13th. Ashplundh has kindly donated 2 rooms for the out of state volunteers, I will have more details on that later. We are still reaching out to other sources to cover a third room and hopefully some travel expenses.

If you plan on heading down to help out please send me a pm or email to let me know if you plan to be there for the set up. I know several of you will have some long drives to get to Owensboro so hopefully we can figure out some carpooling to help everyone out.

For anyone interested in heading out the KAA TCC we are planning a rendezvous in Cincinnati on Thursday evening and carpooling from there. Send me a PM if you want to meet up and I will get you the address.

I also have received word from the ISA about this whole idea and they are extremely interested in the possibilities. No firm word yet, but it may be possible that we can get some support from them as we plan out future events. Several commercial companies including Sherrill have also expressed their support of the idea and may try to lend assistance in the future.

Looks like a plan was put in motion and this coming weekend we will see how the things have come through. It's like one big family of tree guys helping other tree guys.

Without a doubt we had mixed results for the travelling techs and judges from the KAA TCC this weekend. Due to last minute schedule problems we were only able to field 2 volunteers to head down to assist in KY. Many thanks to TreeRat for making the trip, working his tail end off, and for the really, really bad jokes.

Anyone who attended the KAA TCC will probably tell you that it certainly could have run smoother. The fact is that we were WAYYYYYY understaffed and probably could have used 10-15 more hands (I guess I meant 20-30 actual hands) to pull this one off. The volunteers that were there did all they could but without a doubt we could have used more help. I feel somewhat bad for the climbers as their experience certainly could have been a better one but hopefully things will be better in the future.

The lessons learned from this experience include: some chapters desperately need additional experienced volunteers and judges to aid in running their TCCs, the earlier we can plan these events the better chance that we can work around conflicts in scheduling, and that sometimes if things aren't completely broken they may need to be fixed anyway.

Thanks again to everyone that helped out and I look forward to trying this out again soon.

Rich and Paul,

Thank you both so much for all the work you did for us this past weekend. Without you, the competition would not have happened. We certainly wouldn't have had a gear inspection!

I'm waiting to get the score sheets from the judges to see what I did wrong.

Also, Chris and I would love to help out with other events in the area if you need. Setting up, retrieving gear, whatever you need. Just give a shout.

Hey Cory,

You didn't do anything wrong. The score sheets are set up on a way that makes things like what happened to you entirely possible. Your climb was fantastic and you shouldn't feel like you didn't do something correctly. I was thoroughly impressed with not only your climbing but how you handled the outcome. I can guarantee that you will have a very successful competitive climbing future if you don't let this one get you down.

You and Chris would be huuuuuuuuuuuuge assets to any chapter running a competition. We can certainly use your help in Ohio next June if you are available (usually second saturday in June) I would be honored to work with you guys in the future and absolutely look forward to it.

If I weren't so mentally challenged with my new video camera, there would have been some beautiful shots of very fluid, confident climbing on your behalf!

Instead I am the proud owner of some really bad "Blair Witch Project" footage.

Yessiree, back in the Beechwood Trees and Gardens days. The best operator I've ever worked with! (He's an owner operator out of Southern Indiana. 23 tonner)
