TCIA winter management conference

Tom,

I just got finished snorkeling off of a catamaran and watching my kids hold wild (sorta) rays. That was fantastic fun. On the way back we saw a huge water spout in the ocean. That was my first tornado sighting ever. Can't wait for tomorrow! Oh, and the speaker today was really great.

Did you go to Stingray City? Never been, but my divemaster friends from MX tell me it's a well run operation where the animals are respected.

I saw a spotted eagle ray with a wingspan of about 8 feet back in January in Cozumel. Fantastic animals!

WOW MARK!!!!

NO WAY.

That's awesome. What a bonus.

We saw the thunder storm cloud building. So it must have been the one we saw.

no rain here at my hotel.

hey, if anyone's beach doesn't have great snorkling, ours is very good. So much stuff to see in 5 feet of water.

i'll upload photos from my phone if i can.

Hey Tom, I'm the Steve Irwin from the US, so I can handle any wildlife I want. Plus, I've been stung by a sting ray and lived... (No dishonor intended, Steve was one of my favorites.)

btw, i chased two small stingrays today. Really weird, brough out feelings i didn't know i had. I wanted to kill them for the pain i experienced years earlier.

If you have been stung by a stingray, you will never forget it.

.... just keeping it flavorful for you readers. I like wildlife like crazy and I have the stingray city trip booked for Friday.

yes, Tom , I'm sure it's stingray city Mark went to.

Those big rays get fed every day and I'm sure they are docile as can be. Can't wait to stand with them.

a common local. everywhere. this is just a little one.

I've thrown flowers to the big ones and they eat them up.

I don't think it was stingray city. I believe they called it stingray sand bar or something. I think it is about a half mile from the city but along the same reef. We ended up snorkeling more along the reef where the ledge drops down like 6000 feet? Scary to think what lives that far down.

X, stop feeding and touching the wildlife, especially underwater! Jeez!

we were just walking on the rocky part of a beach this evening, looking at all the stuff in the tide pools and receeding water.

tons and tons of little stuff to look at.

Well, I saw this worm thing that looked like a hairy caterpiller, quite pretty. I knew it looked bad to touch.

my daughter and i yelled to my wife to come back and look at this thing, she wasn't willing to walk back, i really wanted to see it.

i said to my daughter, "now, like i always say to you don't ever touch anything that you don't know what it is or what it can do. but I'm going to pick this thing up because i want mommy to see this". i figured if it rested on my hand, it wouldn't do anything to me. that part was right.

but i did use my other hand to help it into my hand.

Well, just like a bad caterpillar, my finger started stinging. i look at my finger and i have lots of hairs sticking out of it. I kinda pulled them out, but plenty broke off in the finger.

It was a good example to my daughter, ha.

I looked it up, usually called a bristle worm, sometimes fire worm or sometimes sea caterpillar.

It just keeps stinging for a while, no big deal

I am more worried about the reef and the wildlife than you. If every traveler or guest put their hands on a fragile part of a reef or similar ecosystem, there would soon be nothing to touch.

I am mostly busting your cubes, but as a diver with a good amount of 'down' time, I feel the need to remind others to respect such fragile things. I make it a point to touch NOTHING when I dive, and it makes me a better diver.

Hope you guys are having a blast. We're suffering in the crappy weather up here. Please bring some sun home with you!

-Tom

And I totally agree. I'm a certified diver through Padi and Nitrox Drivers. I'm not in a true reef. Would never touch living coral, as I know the danger of killing it or burning me.

I'm loving the reptiles here, got up close with rare Cayman Blue iguanas today, layed down next to a big male.

Noel, Brandon and I at a morning education conference. (picgture from my cell)

Glad to have met these guys, both are members on the buzz.

Especially glad to have met Noel since I've had a "fight" with him in the past on the buzz. I figured he was a decent guy and he sure seems to be. Good, strong, no BS person, just like i figured he would be.

I would really like to get to sit down with them with more time, i think we could really learn a lot from each other.

I'm wearing family tree's Kong Kills shirt like I said I would if he mailed it to me.

I didn't realize he was going to send me a long sleeve shirt to use in an 82 degree location, but oh well, I said i would wear it, so i wore it.

here is proof.
