Tail tying lava

I had to traverce to the other side of a tree last week. I tail tide with taut line hitch lava rope. the hitch would not grab. I don't usualy do this anymore but was wondering if any one had a problem like that?

I don't know anyone that uses a tautline for lava line but my guess is that due to it's smaller diameter and the material is a bit slippery that it wouldn't grab.

I've taught the tautline to new climbers on my pi line before and it worked fine but I had to add an additional wrap when the line was new

why would you even tie the tautline? let alone a tautline without a safety knot. Roll with the blake's. its awesome.

I was tied in with vt at one point and had to switch to other side of tree. I did'nt have another cord availble, so I went old school with the taut line. I did have stopper not on the end.

When I first got my Lava, I was a bit surprised by how slippery it was. The Schwabisch and two wrap prusiks I've used on Poison Ivy slipped a bunch on Lava. I was using 8mm Bee Line with a four turn Schwabisch and it simplye wouldn't hold. I added one upper turn, i.e. one down, four up, and it worked fine.

It was very eratic with a Grigri on a SRT rappel - it either wanted to grab or release too much.

I', beginning to suspect that new Lava may have a residue left over from manufacturing that makes it a bit slick. I've heard it will break in and settle down with use.

In his presentation of the hitch way back when ('90) in Nylon Highway
(NSS-caving), Prohaska advised adding an extra wrap at the away end
of the "Blake's" ("ProhGrip", seems apt) in cases of slippery line, or to
add one at the near end (going around object line & tail) if the problem
was stiffness.
Seems like the verdict here is re slipperiness, so that extra turn or two
should help. But I think that you're better off with the ProhGrip/Blake's
than the Tautline, anyway -- where the wraps are better loaded.
