Tachyon

ill probably give them a call tomorrow, not to thrilled about buying something from them if wespur doesnt have it for sale yet, usually wespur has a cheaper price which i can use to drive sherrills price down

Moss,
I hear what you're saying, but some rope does seem to glaze easier for me. PI and blaze are the ones I've had issues with whereas velocity doesn't seem to do it much at all. Possibly has to do with how tightly braided the cover is. If I remember correctly Tachyon has a pretty tight cover braid.

If your rope glazes, just use it without a friction saver for a dozen or so climbs and it will be all warm and fuzzy again. My favorite rope is a 90' section of Poison Hi-vy I used before I got a friction saver. It's nice and fuzzy and my friction knots never slip on it.

PI and Velocity are very different ropes even though the specs are similar. To me, Velocity is slipperier because of the tight weave in the outer braid. HRC doesn't hold as well and when it's wet I have a hard time getting any knot or cord to hold well. It does feel good in the hands though and it has a killer bite for footlocking.

PI's braid is tight but the carriers are more rounded so it feels rougher. Tachyon has that same feel when you pick it up. I have know idea how it feels under weight though, I'm kinda itching to wear out another rope so I can try it.

Check your PMs Marc

I just got 150' of Tachyon in the mail today!

I'll be testing it out tomorrow, and get back here .

It's a pretty rope, I got the high vis orange with blue.

Thats awesome, who did you get it from? Sherrill, wesspur, bailey's? I still haven't found anyone selling it yet, but i did see it advertised in the TCI Mag this month.

I just came back from the Kansas Arborist Assoc. conf and Charly Pottorff (Charly's International) had a spool of it. I think he said the price was 0.87/foot.

his #: 785-537-9821

He is in Manhattan KS.

We have all of it in stock right now, every color.

I'm sure to be getting some reports soon as to how it performs. Personally, haven't tried this rope yet but I'm looking forward to it.

I ordered one from the local Arb supplier yesterday. He had a bunch on the shelf, just not the way I want it (200' of the green with eye splice) isn't that alwys the way?!?!

I've been climbing on it for about a week now and I love it. Just enough stretch to feel comfy but not so much that you're fighting it when you have lots of line out. Its nice and grabby for footlocking too. All in all its my favorite rope so far.

Was this for me Jim?

I can try to answer questions. I started climbing on the rope about a year ago (just under maybe?). The first version was a thicker/heavier line (12.4 mm). We then decided to trim it down and make it lighter. Two real goals drove us, one was to make a neater splice than the Fly, and the other was to make the rope lighter.

After we got started we then went for some fine tuning. We wanted the rope to be smaller (close to 11mm), lighter than Fly, yet stay round and firm, and not be too bouncey. I believe that we got all of that within reason. Tachyon is lighter, stays round and has less bounce than Fly, with a nicer splice. More beneifts are that in the 3rd party testing dome in France to get EN 1891 approval, it was able to absorb enough energy to pass as a climbing line (EN 1891A) not just an ascent line like all of the other 11mm lines I know of (EN 1891B). What was funny is that they found the rope was able to pass both tests since it had lower elongation at lower % levels (like when climbing), but absorbed energy when hit with higher % (like a dynamic load). That is a nice feature.

I have been climbing on one length for a few months now that was spliced at both ends to see if it would bunch up in the middle. So far I can't find a place where that happened. I guess time will tell.

One other side note is that it has a higher abrassion resistance than the Fly did. Any other questions?

Just one quick question: how thick does it feel in the hand? I got my Poison Ivy because it was supposed to be about the thickest "11mm" line that would still run nicely through hardware, but it actually feels thinner than my Fly. How does the diameter of Tachyon feel compared to Fly, Blaze, P.I., etc.?

Well, Fly is thicker than any of those that you mention. I believe that Tachyon is similar to the size of PI. Near 11.5mm if I am not mistaken. But, it stays round and firm so it does not feel smaller when climbing on it.

I think your right Mark. I've always felt like it was bigger too, but 11mm is what I've been told. Kinda hard to measure when dealing with fractions of a mm.
