Swinging in the Palms

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E__q3pCEQO8&feature=channel_page

This is kind of an interesting camera angle.
Things I editted out of the video;
me screaming like a girl evey time a lose my footing,
me screaming like a girl when the palm grubs fall on my feet and crawl directly up my pants,

Things I should have editted out, all the bla bla bla. I hope I never hire anyone who talks as much as I do when I climb.
Enjoy, and for those of you who dont do palm work, thank your lucky stars

LOL, Cool camera angle, when the light hit the fronds right, it looked like tinsel on a Christmas tree. WHICH it obviously wasn't!

How was your rope anchored?

So I gets this call fromm Canada.
Some crazy guy yelling at me for spiking palm grass.
This brings up an interesting topic, Spiking Palm Grass.

Let the games begin.
Oh and hey Treedimensional, it was a solicitor calling so you may call back and contine with your thrashing sir.

I Jesse Huffman, promise to only climb palms SRT style...

I was gonna ask, but I guess I didn't have to.

Are there BMP's? What is accepted as OK? Although I have spent alot of time down South and South of the border, my lack of experience actually working on these trees leaves me somewhat ignorant.

(PS - You must have known before you posted that this would happen, right?)

Yup, will do, BUT when they pay ya less than they pay a baby sitter, for Riskin' your life, they deserve to have their tree trunks (grass stalks) look like they have been in a war.

I am NOT too familiar with all the species of palm, BUT the ones that develop the huge skirts should be respected as climber killers. They don't have to kill a climber, IF the proper rope technique is used. I like the expression that Blinky uses, something like "it costs a lot of money to get un-dead". Jesse told me what those S--t sticks paid, glad we don't have 'em here.

I am a gear junkie, NOT nearly as bad as FT, but if I see something that will make the job easier (and for this purpose, less destructive to the tree), I am game to "invest" in it. Most of my acquisitions have made tree work safer and physically easier.

The full time tree guys and gals, earn their whole income from tree work. I have another vocation, BUT they take turns payin' the bills. Look at equipment purchases as an investment. SRT/RAD stuff seems pricey at the start, BUT IMO pay for themselves is a very short time.

FOR the record I am neither a tree (or palm) hugger or hater, I prune more trees than I remove. Like Jamin and others I try to educate my clients. AND like most on here, I wish we got renumerated for the the talent AND the risks we deal with on MOST jobs.

Yes indeed. I appreciate everyones input

That is how it's done. Palms are monocots and therefore NOT trees. SRT is only recommended on palms with excessive dead fronds (palms with multiple years of growth) when bucket truck access is not an option. Those palms were trimmed last year.

Although long term spiking can be damaging to a palm trunk, it's a small price to pay since the going rate for trimming one palm is around 50 bucks, and they are only spiked once a year (most of the time). Queen palms, however, should never be spiked because of their "delicate nature".

..oh and the palm grubs! They fall on your boots and love to crawl up inside pant legs. They crawl fast and bite!
So it's important to kill them before they get TOO far..(if you know what i mean). You kill em' by crushing them against your leg inside your pants. Fun stuff.

Hey Rocks, can we spike queen palms if we carefully stick our gaffs into the holes from the last guy?
laughabove.gif

I am kidding ofcoarse.
When I fist logged on to the buzz there was a thread going about these crazy metal hoops that the Italians use for spikeless climbing, I think their website had a picture of their crew all up in palms with a bicycle?
Anyone remember that?
Was it a crazy dream?

I would love to be the 1st PRODUCTIVE spikless climber in Phoenix. I would also love to see it snow here in the Valley next month.

You won't see me climbing no palm with fast crawling biting grubs in it fer $50! That's insane, those things suffocate climbers fairly often.

Say that when you and a groundie can do 17 in 4.5 hours
wink.gif

Only the the heavy skirted palms suffocate climbers. Those are done SRT or in a bucket.

That would be YOU and a groundie. I'm a slow old man, I'd do two, have myself a little break, do another, have lunch, do one more and decide I ate too much and take the rest of the day off.
