Surfing up river in England

Tom you have entirely too much time on your hands. Where do you find this stuff? /forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif
It would be neat to give it a try but with that long of a cycle time it would be learning all over again each time.

Thats about 15-20 miles away from me but I've never seen it! Heard about it though. It usually gets on the tv news when someone nearly drowns riding it!

There are five discussion forums that I check on every day and maybe another ten that I check once a week or so. This link came from the Patrick O'Brian forum. POB wrote the Master and Commander or Aubrey/Maturin series. Twenty one books and about 6,200 pages of reading. When I got into the series I cheated. I would have one book being read and one in the tape deck. My local library had the unabridged tapes so I got through the series by listening to about 30%. Nothing beats reading though.

The people on the POB forum are very diverse. Many US and UK participants. That draws out some interesting cross-posting and discussions. Since there are some UK folks on TB I thought that the surfing would be interesting. When I travel I like to see geologic and natural points of interest. Timing a vacation to see an event like this would be pretty cool. Since the tides that cause this phenomenon are routine it would be easy to see. Of course, the high tides are the ones that would be spectacular.

Surf's up!!! Time to hang ten...

Tom, it appears there was a reasonable "bore" this morning. A slightly higher one is due on March 12th. I'll go and take some pics if you like.

If anyone was planning to travel to this area then another must see would be the annual cheese rolling event.

I've not been for a few years now because it falls on the same weekend as the Irish tree climbing comp, but we always used to go every year. I've never taken part because I've broken both my ankles in the past and don't want to do that again. Broken ankles is the most common injury as well as collar bones, wrist and even the odd pelvis!!!

In the past it was held at 6pm and everyone had had a few beers and more people were injured. Now its held at midday and its a bit tamer, but still thousands of poeple come to watch.

Just wondering if you've heard of it?

And once you start falling, that's it! Theres usually a row of ambulances with engines running at the bottom!

Not tried that one!! They used to throw sweets all over the hill for the kids to pick up. Not sure if they still do. Its so steep you need to hold onto the grass in front of you to be able to walk/climb up!
