Sub-contractor workers comp?

Hi all,
I'm in the process of setting myself up as an independent contractor (in the state of Oregon) so that I can legitimately contract climb, as well as do the occasional private work - all on the up and up.
My impression is that as a sole proprietor I wouldn't need a WC policy on myself, but does that put the companies that contract me in a tight spot if something were to happen? How do those of you who use sub contractors manage this risk and how can I help to mitigate any perceived or actual risk to them on my end?

thanks

Get an accountant. They can help set you up with all the (FUN) tax stuff.

Check with your local state for an idependant contractor definition.

I'd also look into disability and liability policies.

Every state is different. In PA you don't need it if you are set up as an S Corp.

Same here in vermont plus if you are are sole prop or a member of an LLC you don't have to carry it.

That said, the people you work for may require it regardless whether the state does. so be sure to check your contracts carefully.

My understanding for VA - the people that you work as a sub will be required to pay the comp if you do not have it. I think you would be covered here if you weren't carrying the insurance.

Over here in Ga. I used to have to carry a "ghost policy". It was basically a $800 waiver. It was a policy that I was exempt from but if I had employees then It would have covered them. Here that's all I needed to contract climb. Good luck!

In Oregon, as long as you are a legal contractor and do not get all your business from one general, then you are not required to have comp on your self.
