As some of you already know I'm currently visiting friends in Knotts Island, NC. I've been here before but this time I'm really paying extra attention to my surroundings. We're down here for a few more days house hunting and I'm noticing all the different trees from up north. Hack berries .... structure seems like a Mulberry. Dense wood and brittle. Also a nuisance tree? Ponderosa pine is of the yellow variety? Back "home" they're called scrub pines, but I do consider that to be a slang name. I've a lot to learn .... all over again.:D

Hackberry trees are like iron. One of my favorite trees to admire. Rough on ropes to climb and the wood weighs a ton!!! No sure about where you are but we have Loblolly Pines, White Pine and Longleaf Pine. May look like a ponderosa though.

I can tell the Hack berry is a solid, heavy, dense wood when I knock on it. The couple of them on the property here all have had some storm damage and are ant infested. Ascetically they are beautiful.

If your island is anything like Western GA and Eastern AL, ants will be your scourge! They are everywhere! I think I have about 6 billion on my property alone. Also you may have sugarberry instead of hackberry. Sugarberry is a close cousin to h-berry but with smooth bark, not so hard on ropes and hands.

Welcome to the South mayne! We got plenty of pines like Steve said(Loblolly, long leaf, White pine etc) Hackberry aka Sugarberry or Ironwood is a bitch! Hard/ heavy wood that looks like it has genital warts-rough on the hands/arms when climbing. We got Sweetgums for days and every Oak you can think of......hell, now that I think of it we have every tree you can think of!

way up there--interesting country. i could not understand why anyone would want to live there...fishing? sailing?

Sugarberries, true to their name, taste a lot sweeter than hackberries!

Ants are trees' friends, and storm damage can often heal.

Thank you kindly for the warm welcome. :D I'm not looking forward to going back ''home'' on tues. Too many loose ends there and I need to do a little work on my credit first. When I come back, I'm coming back with all my shit in tow!

My girls best friend lives in Knotts so Moyock is right around the corner. Looks like Moyock is our target. Just gotta find the right place.
