stolen gear returned

[ QUOTE ]
That's a Shame.

Seems like he was doing you a favor for taking that crap. Might have even saved your life had it persuaded you into getting out of tree work all together.

[/ QUOTE ]

Not you again...
Thought you learned to keep your mouth shut after you apologized for giving me a hard time about pulling with equipment...

When your gear gets robbed once, it makes you wonder just how soon before it's going to happen again.

I have internal and external locking rods on the bucket truck. The night I got hit, only 1 of 4 rods on that side were installed, instead of all rods being installed as is the norm 99.9% of the time. Yes, I should be shot for slacking. I have since experimented with taking all gear of value home with me at night and leaving the boxes unlocked, but that proved just not feasible. So I'm back to using all the locking rods all the time.

But with the advent of powerful battery powered cutting tools, the locks seem to be a slim defense.

What ideas do you folks have re theft prevention, short of parking inside a locked, alarmed, fenced building? There is no electricity were I park.

[/ QUOTE ]

Where do you park??? Maybe security webcams sent to your mobile device and a remote to activate a generator to power screeching alarms and high intensity lights to blind them. You could have a disembodied voice sternly telling them to back away from the now electrified vehicles and that the police are on their way.

Rottweiler serves the thieves in my yard. He'll let you pet him on the way in but on the way out he'll be ready to dance.

Yea. Then I stumbled upon you amazing YouTube videos and decided that you were as dumb as ez says you are. Damn you for making me agree with him on something. Damn you to hell

To be completely honest, I do agree with how you handled yourself with the kid.

And now I'm even more pissed at you for making me agree with something YOU did.

Damn I'm having a bad day

Cory, I've been looking into time lapse cameras for capturing tree work vids. One company has a motion activated time lapse camera, affordable and weather resistant. I'm going to buy one for my house, and set it up in a tree. Where your gear is stored is tough though, they can come in on foot from the tracks or neighboring properties, but if you can set it up in that Oak you could possibly get their face.

The cameras are made by "Brinno".

This has been one of my biggest fears after all most of us have broken our back saving to by our equipment.

In 08 I had people siphoning the fuel out of my truck and chipper.
Now there are cameras and lights in the lot!
That's sucks Cory, hope you catch them! If you want I’ll let you use my anti theft beat down bar I got free with my GRCS!

Thanks guys!

That brinno looks sweet, let me know how you like it. Yes, I think they came in from the adjoining property. The building owner checked his camera, which shows entry and exit from the lot, and nothing showed up.

Spending a night on the cab guard with a shot gun sends a pretty good message, especially if you get one or two rounds off in the direction of the thief.

The kid climbed up into the bucket and off loaded all that stuff. Sheessh, that is a problem child.

We needed new stuff anyway... :)!!!

Locks keep honest people honest and annoy the owner when he can't find the key.

I would be more upset by having to fix the broken into doors.

We do lock and pin my trucks most of the time and leave the keys in the ignition... :|. Cost us so much more to have a guy standing around for an hour because he doesn't have a key to get the truck to the job. Funny how the guys lose 2 sets of keys in a year at a cost of replication of $200 a set. We have been pretty blessed with stupidity causing more loss than theft. Pretty sure we dumped a few saws that were left in the chip box... Had a brand new blower left on the corner downtown - gone in 5 minutes left.

Like I said, needed a new one anyway :D.

The kid just mailed me a letter...
"Dear Mr Murphy,
I AM writing to apologize for stealing equipment from your truck. What I did was immature and stupid. I should have known better than to take something that did not belong to me, especially out of a truck belonging to an honest hardworking tradesman because someday I would like to be in your shoes, running my own company. I appreciate you not pressing charges and giving me the opportunity to come clean. I understand there is nobody to blame but myself for my actions and I fully intend to do whatever I can to make this right. Please let me know what I can do to fox this..
Sincerely

Seems like a good kid huh?

Something about this whole story seems embellished. Especially this letter. Unless I see the original, I'm gonna assume you called yourself an honest hardworking tradesman. Anyone who has seen your videos knows that you always take the path of least resistance.

I'm calling Shenanigans.

Daniel, you are a dork stuffed into the casing of an adult nerd. "Thought you learned your lesson" is probably the lamest retort I have read on Treebuzz for months.
