Sterling HTP

Hey everyone, first post. Looking to get some rope for a RADS SRT setup. Can anyone give some feedback on the sterling HTP 11mm rope? I have done a lot of searching and found people saying that it is very durable but sometimes doesn't hold knots as well as a more supple line. Not a lot of other info.

I was looking at the sterling outlet, which has pretty good prices on the HTP prime shorts.

The use will be SRT straight up for a hunting setup, so I only need 30-80 feet depending on if the situation dictates a cinched or base anchor tie in point.

Thanks!

For your intended use, I think you can do better than HTP. You will not gain much benefit on such a short climb by using a static line and as you say, it is not good with knots. Just get a length of more typical arborist line like Tachyon or Velocity.

OH, welcome to the buzz!

Thanks!

The knot holding was my only worry. My second choice was Yale bandit. I already have a little for my bridge and lanyard and like it, I only considered the HTP because I could get a longer piece for the money.

Would love to hear more thoughts on this line.

It will only be knotted at one end (with a delta link) and occasionally with a base tie off, and with backup stopper knots, but if I am climbing it I obviously want to be sure it will hold.

I use Sterling HTP for SRT, most often with a midline Alpine Butterfly and delta screw link cinched anchor. Good rope, but too stiff for most knots. As stated earlier, for 30 to 80 feet, it probably doesn't matter that much. And you'll need another rope you can tie termination knots in for a lanyard.

Tendril is never listed on the outlet page. I've checked daily all year long.

Never done RADS, but HTP seems like it would be too stiff.

Htp is not as stiff as you guys are making it sound. Holds knots great.
Not my experience at all, my sterling is not knot friendly at all. I have the white stuff, and it got lumpy as well. I'm not a big fan, but I've only had one hank of the stuff, so who knows?

Don't recall having much trouble tying knots with it, but my HTP gets stiff as a coax cable after weighting it. Maybe that's okay for RADS, what do I know? I think I'd rather use Tendril.

Like some of the others have said on here, you will probably benefit more with a climbing line than a static line, in the long run that is. Static rope will stiffen up with use over time, unlike a traditional climbing line. I've seen PMI Classic, PMI EZ Bend, and BlueWater II Plus look like steel cable, granted these were caving ropes, but, this is the nature of a static kernmantle rope.

I have a 200' Samson Static line and it is starting to get a little stiff, but still holds knots fine and runs through gear just as easy. I just got a shorty spool of Edelrid Static that I got from TreeStuff.Com and it is a little springy compared to the Samson and some others that I have had over the years, but knots well and is smooth running.

There seems to be some confusion about Sterling's static rope offerings.

Their traditional static rope is the SuperStatic2. It is a nylon rope with around 7% elongation. Holds knots pretty well and is very popular.

Their HTP ropes are made of polyester. (High Tenacity Polyester). These ropes have very low elongation ~2%. I have owned and have sold both ropes for years.

HTP excels at high line use and hauling work on towers, etc. I have used mine for SRT with a Rig in a RADS setup and it held knots well and I was pretty happy, but if I was still using that setup I'd use SuperStatic I think.

Here's why: The HTP has so little 'give' it will generate high forces on your anchors (and body) if you were to get slack in the system and take a fall.

I'd grab a short SuperStatic (or even a Marathon Mega 11.2) and I think you'd be happy.

i never had a problem tying knots with HTP

I love my 11 mil htp but now I'm wondering if I could benefit from the 10 mil for my next line. Any thoughts?
