Splicing

Ok, I know that this is a thread somewhere, but what are some good instructional materials I can get to learn how to splice at home? I know 3 strand like the back of my hand, but zilch on everything else. Im looking for any advice on a basic starter "kit". What tools, books, DVDs, materials, etc would I need to start. Just bare bones stuff, enought ot learn and do simple splices, nothing too fancy. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The big three rope manufacturers (Yale Cordage, New England Ropes, and Samson) each have directions on their website. Samson's are the best. All the directions are free.

Brion Toss makes a great splicing book, as JP referred to.

The BEST resource is right here. Ask the questions and we'll get you squared away!

Shawn, you are in luck since you live in Toledo. Stop by Knot & Rope Supply in Perrysburg. You will find a splicing shop with every splicing tool and every type of climbing rope available. 24 strand, 16 strand, and all the high tech heat resistant rope you can think of. Definately one of the best places to learn.

I live in South Jersey, where would the closest place to go for me to learn, watch, whatever. Want to learn to splice but not sure if i just wanna read about it or watch video, its to important to screw anything up or learn with out being able to ask questions.

Thanks, you can PM me if you like so were not hijacking a thread

John,
In an earlier post you mentioned Newport. Let's say someone lived near Newport and wanted to get into serious splicing. What would you suggest then?

Countryboy and banjo, I'm not sure who you could talk to out in your resespective areas. In Shawns case, it mentioned that his location was close to Knot & Rope so that was ideal for him.

Seeing splicing up close so you can learn hands on will greatly reduce your learning curve. The TCIA Expo probably has the best forum to see the best splicers in the business do their thing. If you can make it to this show, it is a great investment of your time..

If that isn't an option, then get the Brion Toss video. It is very good at showing how the splices are made. When you couple that with printed materials, you have a nice starting point.

Be ready to experience some frustration as you learn. Splicing is an art, and if and when you see the pros splice just remember they do dozens of splices in a typical week. They are fast and make very safe splices because they get a lot of practice.

Of course, feel free to stop by Knot & Rope Supply to see splicing or just climb and try some rope.

Awesome, thanks John. Called and spoke to a young lady that works for you, I told her you had pointed the company out to me on treebuzz. Anyways, I plan on stopping in tomorrow sometime. Pretty excited to find a rope place in town. Thanks again John.
