splicing workshop

hey guys,
i'm trying to put together an arborist splicing workshop with brion toss in seattle this fall and am curious what splices you all have found a use for other than locking brummel and 16 strand. i'm a splicing newbie, and those are the only two i've done but i imagine treebuzzers being the creative clever crowd we are can suggest one or two others. anyone?

and would anyone be interested in attending a one day workshop in seattle on this topic?

thanks in advance,
k.

3 strand, adjustable single strand splices (whoopie, loopie, etc), double braid, proper splicing technique for high-modulus lines, end to end splices,

Basically, take Brion's advanced splicing class, take out the sta-set X, change the regatta braid to Yalex, then you just about have it!

Can I come?!

hey nick.
whoopie i hadn't thought of. that'd be fun. i already took brion's class, but we did so much splicing of so many ropes it was hard to keep track of which rope constructions needed which splice. awesome class, if anyone has the opportunity to take it - 2 days of splicing til your brain hurts. i'm hoping this class will provide a sort of bridge between the yacht-oriented info i was swamped with and the arborist applications - many of the ropes and splices are the same, i think.

anyway, stay tuned for dates and times - anyone's welcome!

How well does Brion know how we use those ropes? Does he know what we DON'T need to know? Could we prep him for the class first to make sure he teaches the splices as they relate to the abuse doled out be treeworkers?

nick,
i myself would not presume to prep brion toss on anything related to rope. you can contact him via his website if you'd like to discuss particular arboricultural issues.

Brion and I hung out for a bit at TCI a few years back. Tom and I took him to a rec climb after the show. He would understand the basics of climbing for sure. After being at the show he probably knows a little bit about the type of rigging we do too.

My favorite thing I learned from him was the 2 speed block and tackle

I'm going to be in the area, Oregon, for the TCI Rendezvous and New Tribe open house in September. That might be a little too soon to put the workshop together. If you do, I would probably make the trip.

I'll see if I can find the pics of my two-speed handy billy.

To get the general idea, look at System 10 on this page:

http://www.harken.com/rigtips/gtftmain.php

I used the concept but changed the hardware using 2" double sheave blocks and prussik minding pulleys. Mine stays rigged and ready to go. It is a very useful system.

just talked to brion's shop and they're looking at the first weekend in november. if we can get enough people and there are enough splicing applications to merit it, it could be a 2 day workshop.

I think my comment was misunderstood. I've met Brion, frequent his site, and have taken his Advanced Splicing class. I KNOW that he knows tons about rope and rigging. He's a Master Rigger, afterall. But I also know that he doesn't do treework and the things he makes day to day out of rope are way different that what we make/use day to day. The way he uses his ropes are way different than the way we use ours. I just thought if there was any doubt about how to apply a certain splice to different aspects of tree work, maybe in advanced rigging scenarios or other less widely known aspects of tree work, we, as a team, could get the sylabus (sp?) refined so that it related DIRECTLY to what we do and use on a day to day basis, that's all. /forum/images/graemlins/smile.gif

just an update:

the workshop is now pretty much a go, will most likely be in seattle in early november, and may be morphing into a splicing/mechanical advantage/rigging workshop. if you're interested and/or have suggestions on particular things you'd like covered, you can send emails directly to sales@briontoss.com.
