some people that just shouldn\'t work in trees...

I was working on homework this morning and watching some local tree service take down two trees with a man lift and a 10 ft sling for rigging. basically he'd tie the sling 5-7 ft apart, and then hold the rope away and use the chainsaw with the other hand, totally shock loading the sling(obviously) then would grab the branch and cut pieces off. then untie the sling and do it again.. I mean how hard is it to go buy a rope!?! And do you really have to one hand an 026? the guy has two stick saws, but can't affort a rope for rigging... Also, everything is dropped and thrown all over without any accuracy, just looks like amateur hour over there, yet they have a truck with tree service stickers and all kinda of saws. makes me wish there were ansi police or something so people who do the job right get jobs and people like him dont make us look bad!

Why bother with the sling at all if he is just tossing the stuff around anyways? 2 hand the saw and cut small pieces he can just bomb out. It takes all kinds to make the world go around I guess!

exactly! and its a straight up and down silver maple, so its not like he's got some kind of unpredictable tree haha. ohwell I'm just glad he didnt chop his arm off or break anything! makes me appreciate safe working environments that much more!

Re: some people that just shouldn\'t work in trees...

yea got a story from a guy (the customer) was complaining about the horrible company that pruned his tree really bad and left huge stubs. The tree company's response was he doesn't do this (tree work) everyday and doesn't really know.

Still wondering why this customer hired these guys.

Still might be better than some home owner highjinks (and he was using a chainsaw). I was doing street trees out west one day and when we stopped for lunch one of the home owners came out to shoot the breeze with us. Told us how his neighbour across the street took down his tree with a skill saw. We thought he was joking... then he brought out the pictures... Good laugh.

Re: some people that just shouldn\'t work in trees.

You think YOU have it rough.....imagine being on the receiving end of all the calls we get from guys that "just need some rope to help bring a tree down"

We get these calls quite a bit, especially this time of year. A lot of these guys seemed determined to get the 1" polypropylene rope and "save some money"

Just for fun I let Shawn take a few of those calls.....He, he he.....

The other afternoon as we were leaving the house some guys were doing an ash tree "removal" at a house for sale behind us.

I noticed with a degree of slight alarm that this tree they were working on was hung up in one of the neighboring trees leaving this ash tree tipped over and in a precarious state. Darn dangerous situation to say the least.

I told 'em that for about a $1,000 they could get a arborist company over there and get that tree, and all the others out of there AND chip and remove all the brush.

As I'm walking away it dawned on me......these guys might of been a "tree company" woops....

To which they started to cut away at the section hanging on the other trees and promptly pinched the saw bar so tight they were hanging from the saw trying to free it.

Re: some people that just shouldn\'t work in trees.

I just wished I was home when I heard some goofball climbed this stone dead Lombardi poplar behind my house that was dead for about 2 years. Like no bark on it dead. Oh man so many stories, electric chainsaws, ladders, 3-strand polypropylene rope.

Re: some people that just shouldn\'t work in trees.

Saw a Latino fellow in the saw shop today, seems he'd damaged his chainbrake by removing the sidecover with the brake engaged (Husky 136?). At first the shop guy seemed merely annoyed but then he and I began exchanging glances of horror as he tried to explain the function of the brake, the ability to sharpen the chain, how much bar oil to put in, etc. This fellow was obviuosly saving money by doing something way out of his league - chainsawing.

Re: some people that just shouldn\'t work in trees.

I know times are tuff and we all try to save money, but to what extent do we or should we try to save. This seems to be the mentality of homeowners with tree problems. They think they can do something they have or should not even attempt. I see so much of this around our area. Seems if you have a saw and a pick up your a tree service. There are so many fly by nighters its unreal. People don't understand that a fully insured and licenced arborist is expensive. They have the knowledge and skills to do a job without any damage or concerns. Its always better to get them before you start instead of after youv'e got yourself in a pickel and need bailed out. Then complain about price to get a tree down they have cut which fell the wrong way and is endangering there neighbors property of something of high value.
I see this day after day. It's even more scarey since Im a utility arborist and try to explain to people they souldn't be within 10ft of a primary line and there not qualified. Apperantly a certificate comes with a chainsaw purchase that qualifies them to do so or anything else they so desire.
With that all sait. I totally agree, There are a lot of people who shouldn't work in trees.

Re: some people that just shouldn\'t work in trees.

Homeowners doing their own, or neighbors helping is cool. Hey, party on, we all need thrills and many have skills and common sense. But the unskilled charging money gives the whole trade a shady reputation and keeps our prices low. Then these jokers move on to a diferent scam and two new ones appear.

Once again consumer education is a solution and our trade organizations should be held responsible. Times have changed there is quality training avalible. Not just for proper tree care but proper removals and proper customer service.
Tree removal is a BIG part of what most arborists do.
