So How's the Weather Up North?

Re: So How\'s the Weather Up North?

After Tshirt weather today in NC, a big inch of snow here tomorrow, and lows back in the teens. A good book or two by the fire, a pot of tea, and let it pass. Gee I sure do miss Wisconsin right now.

Not!

Happy People is great. The way he selected his ski trees, old school. Same geography and climate as here, different culture though, fascinating. Altered boreality.

North of what ?

Today on the North coast (Lake Erie) it is -13F (-30 wind chill).

Many years ago I was working on the Gulf coast (Mobile, AL).

It snowed ~1/2” overnite (I guess this happens once every 10, 15 or 20 years).
All construction, deliveries, schools, etc stopped.
The city started using dump trucks to spread sand on the highway entry / exit ramps.
By noon, all the snow had melted.
In the afternoon there were “hundreds” of accidents as cars slipped & crashed on the sandy roads !

Today they are predicting snow again.
Good Luck ! Be Careful !

Yeah, we are supposed to get it today, 1-3", Big woop! Auburn U closed as of last night for the day. When I lived in central PA, Penn STate closed once in the 28 years I lived there and that was because we had 35" of snow. Bunch of weenies down here!

OldOak, it's just as bad here in North Jersey. That last storm of amounted to 6-10" and the declared a state of emergency! When did a few inches of snow become so threatening?

Cool site! I could read that all day. Mind you I'd get my [pick a different word] kicked for not doing any of the honey do list....

Re: So How\'s the Weather Up North?

Tangent: That ‘winter tree popping’ reminds me of a question I have had and I wonder if any of you know the answer. Are there one-way check valves in trees or something like it? By that I mean – When tipping a fresh cut log upside down (I most notice it during negative blocking) the sap seems to poor out while it hardly flows when hanging upright). I am familiar with the transpirational pull, and that while living the tree’s water flow pulls up through the xylem and all. This makes me think there is a mechanism for fighting the gravitational pull.

I don’t know if I have explained that well enough, but if you need more clarity I can provide. Thanks for your knowledge and experience - you all are great. I have been a buzz sponge for quite some time, but am now a newborn. I feel like I know all you but you have no idea who I am…so thanks for humoring me and taking the time to respond, if you choose, to my question.

And yes it is blistering cold this winter…I am hoping it kills off some of the bugs. We have had it bad with borers this past couple of years.

Thanks,

John

Re: So How\'s the Weather Up North?

Hey John, not sure on the check valve thing but good question. I sure do hate sappy pines in the summer.

It's finally raining here in Northern California , and boy do we need it.

Pines have been lighting up with beetle lately, it's been great! Shame to see so many trees go though.
