the chemical reaction in a battery works better as temperature increases, high temperatures are the enemy of actual electrical current, the hotter it is the more resistance in the wire.

thats why sometimes you can walk into a cold room and when you flick on the light switch the bulb flashes on then burns out, cause the wire was cold it surged for that instantaneous moment and fried the filament.

out in Binghamton NY we had a few days of negative double digits, worst day wind chill was almost -40, but the tried and true 7.3 powerstroke cranked right over, no ether needed.

Gotta love those 7.3's!

I remember -40 when I lived in Van Buren, ME. Brrrrrrr...It snowed during Halloween and we never saw the ground again until Spring.

-14 wind chill right now, and I'm out pruning crab apples. Every time a sucker whips me in the face makes me angry and want to go home. Lol

This was a pi$$ant of a storm in my neck. They called for 8-12 and we got 3. Had to go food shopping yesterday and ended up losing my cool in the self-check out line in front of a hundred people.

I'm putting off work until next week when it gets warmer.

They say -10 with wind chill today. I don't think so, but still not working. lol

Steve, I'm sure you know, but never use ether on a engine with glow plugs. Or any engine for that matter( in my opinion).

Sure was cold walking to the museum today. I'm home now and the car is cleaned off of snow and the wine is flowing freely so it looks like I'm going to make it. These polar votex's are risky business. I am looking forward to surviving the next "ice age".

i agree fully, i was just throwing it in there cause plenty of people do use it as a shortcut for cold starts (and ends up being a shortcut to the demise of the engine)

Why not? i have used ether a lot. Is there something better to do in the cold? I am from the south and have no clue.

I think it can score the cylinders by drying out the oil, and for engines that fire under the heat of compression (diesels), this can be bad. Scored cylinders are bad anyway. Like running straight gas in a chainsaw.

Gasoline has a much lower vapor pressure than diesel.
It ignites at much lower pressure & temperature. It could blow up a diesel engine.

Ether is yet another order (or more) of magnitude !
Yes it ignites very easily, but that could be the demise of your engine, when it ignites at the wrong point or with increased pressure in the engine cycle !

That's a really general question. I own at least seven different diesels and they all behave differently and have different options for preheating/plugging in, etc.

See above ........

Use low temperature diesel fuel.
Engine block resistance heater (electrical coil heats engine coolant) & therefore the whole engine (requires hours).
Engine air box heater (requires 15 -30 seconds; mine is connected to the ignition system); used before starting & after startng.
Battery warmer (heating pad).
Oil viscosity.
Good battery (high cold cranking amps)

None of my trucks have engine heaters. We rarely see temps below thirty, though. But all have been a pain in the arse this year since we have been seeing record lows all winter. Normally at night we go down to 25degrees maybe. but this year we have been around 20 at night and the trucks and chippers have been a pain to start. all have glow plugs but that really doesn't do the trick alone at 20degrees and the crackheads steal anything that isn't lashed and chained down. so plugging a block heater and a heating pad for the batteries is out of the question. any other options?
