Slits

[ QUOTE ]
Thanks Guy. Do you think it's the same as what was on yours?

No, those were lateral, not longitudinal slits, and they had those miniholes in them, and they were in younger tissue.

0 for 3 actually; that case remains unsolved, awaiting further evidence. Next time I'm in Austin...

guymayor, something similar has happened over a very short timespan to the lacebark elm in my backyard. Do these look like what happened to yours? Did you ever arrive at a diagnosis?

Nothing else I'm aware of. (I'm not a pro though.) I had a tree guy take a look. His immediate diagnosis was sapsuckers, but after looking at sapsucker damage online, I have my doubts. I did see a squirrel going to town up high up in the tree the other day so I'm wondering if it's a family of mutant squirrels or something. I will say that he number of slits on the tree is alarming.

holes too small for a sapsucker, or just about any bird or mammal. that brown patch in your 2nd pic does look like skwerl--what did you see em doing?

i'm not a pro either; not on this one anyway!

It appeared to be chewing or gnawing on the bark. It was way up high so I couldn't tell if it was chewing a groove along the lines of these slots or whether it was peeling off the bark in flakes like squirrels typically do.
