Single hand ascender with WR. L or R?

I'm in the market for a hand ascender, to complete a frog walker on my RW/SRT system. Just wanted to jump start a brain storm, and find out what you all have tried, like and or dislike about single vs. dual handled gear.

Previously I have only used duals on a RWFW, and have had my eye on the new ISC single. I'm right handed, and use a right foot pantin. I'm thinking I would do better with a lefty ISC. Seems to me a right foot and right hand ascender looped to my left foot, could get real sloppy real quick.

Why settle for a single handle? I have tried the ascentree double handled in a system much like a frog walker (but without life support on the ascender). And it worked out pretty well. CMI makes a single line double handled ascender that I would like to try. Has anyone used it? Finding a place for that second hand was always frustrating for me using a single handle.

I vote against the double. The singles have lots of applications, hauling, MA, ascent etc. Once you get into the clunkiness of the doubles you lose alot of the functionality.

i agree. the futura is a great ascender, my favorite and i've tried them all. small enough that you barely notice it on your harness. i grip it with two hands and it's never been a problem for me.

futura looks great but... a handle really comes in handy once in awhile. Also lacking a second connection point, it would have been nice if the designers put a second connector opening above the cam. A caver who reviewed it mentioned they had to grip harder, with a handle just having your hand in there is half the grip. All that said it is pretty cool how low profile it is.

To the original question, agree with what others said, if you have a right foot Pantin, go with a left hand ascender.

What i like about the futura is your grip is really just like grabbing the rope, it feels really natural to me but has the obvious benefit of doing the gripping for you. A traditional handle sometimes feels like it puts a different angle on the wrists that just doesnt feel as good for me.

that is a good point that i forgot to mention. it is more natural and i feel like it's less tiring to grab for that reason.

Timely thread. Pondering this exact thing yesterday. I kind of scratched my head and decided that it may not really matter whether its a left or right hand ascender. Probably could use either hand on it. I have both available to try out. I will probably switch hands on whatever device I use from time to time like I do on Ddrt anyway.
I want to check out this Futura thing though now that its been mentioned. Because like trev also said, I am finding the handle a little awkward. But I am still getting used to it. Not much play on SRT yet.

That sounds good, I'll have to find someone that has one so I can try it.

I'll buy Kong if they offer something that's superior to anything else available in the category.

For example, their 1800lb. rated accessory mini-D biner, love those things, last forever, actually has a real gate/spring on it.

And grudgingly their HMS autolocker, even though the gate mechanism always dies after 2 years use, still my favorite symmetrical shape biner for anchoring a split tail/tender to my harness.

That's it. Unless the futura ascender tests well for me. It just looks so flimsy, I'll get over it.

Screw Kong. I'll never buy another kong item again.

Great idea for the hand ascender but it is Kong. Great ideas poor production.

I like my ISC. I just bought a petzl and don't really like it that well. I like the ISC because it has two large holes that a biner can fit into, the petzel only has one which means when i package up my srt kit its more bulky that way. I also don't like the ISC's tab that releases the cam to down climb. It's never released on me but there is that potential.

I actually got one earlier this week. I haven't used it yet but it appears to be pretty stout. If you're ever around the hood here you're welcome to a test drive.

That would be great, thanks, I'll send a PM.
