Most of the ash in my area are gone now. I climbed far too many of them when they were far too dead. I'll never forget the one I came to bid and thought to myself, that looks dangerous I will have to be real careful climbing it. As I walked away, a 6 " diameter lead broke off under its own weight. Still climbed it, but it made me nervous.

Nope, arborist jetpack. You can use that for work positioning. Also avoids the circle of death.
Kind of the whole point of the thread. That 4 inches of punky hinge wood just gave up leaving the outer strip of sound wood take the brunt of the load! Tree really had no choice but to do that it did. Any kind of pull on this top just made matters worse.
Once wood is punky pull lines are useless. There is no solid hinge and therefore setting up an open face or humbolt is pretty much null and void. Snap cut with a mini wedge to trip it and keep kerf open. You are tied into another tree and hopefully have a zip tie or key chain biener breakaway. Pulling on that shit is dangerous AF as it could compromise the whole tree or spar and endanger the cutter. I always climb as high and send it with snap cuts or matching if enough lean to favor. Pull lines are for healthy wood or fairly solid holding wood as in case of cavities etc.

If using pull lines on these trees as you say there are too many points to fail, but if I do decide to use them - if the lower trunk is that compromised - I install a backtie below the weakening cuts (pull line installed above) and get out of the tree and pull the top.
That could work. But if you are pulling that means you have space. Therefore I prefer to just send it inmanageable pieces as long as I am tied into another solid tree.
Oh I hardly ever have space so I live in a different environment. Have to get crafty. Damn hardly have another tree to tie in. Fuck me.
Also have to add. Never got into too much assisted pulling except a couple guys. I do not trust clowns pulling with iron. Pulling too soon is disaster. I can see them in vehicle or such revving and just go too early. If on the ground I might risk it and have but it is just how I don't trust too many with my life on the line. Just island life. I take my time I am old but use the brain.

Agreed, where we are trees are thinned out a bit more and that is sometimes a luxury.
This is used where it’s on its own, and pull in the safest direction possible, from the highest point that can be climbed/reached. Especially large dead decurrent crowns that will rain dead limbs, and even thinning has risk of unbalancing the top.
Then I rig, put some weakening cuts, and I am the one out of tree and behind drivers seat pulling. Climb up again if safe.

Enter mechanical advantage, have one trustworthy worker who isn't an idiot have a controlled pull of 4 guys without a reving engine. Cheap, easy, silent, and dependable. Videos of pulling tops with trucks and climber still in tree, no thanks.

Thanks bud, we all make mistakes and I don't mind looking like a dub if it'll help someone not make the error in the future. Taking fuck ups lightly will get you or someone else hospitalized or worse.

You do not look like a dub. Mistakes and distraction happen to use all. Ask my pinky finger. We just have to hope we live and can learn from them. Arb work can be unforgiving.

I had a bad one trying to finish a job after being sprayed in the eyes with pencil cactus juice. Nearly blinded me but decided to push on so didnt lose next job. Vision was impaired maybe 50%
Tried to drop large blocks and took out a guard rail. I took care too but vision was too misty and somehow got the back cut wrong.
Should have just forgone the next job.
