Show off them splices

A few more leashes from Vortex. Getting better at whipping/stitching and a lot faster.

Still getting that weird kink opposite the bury side on the larger eyes. Starting to think it is normal as I see it in other peoples splices too.

Follow the couple threads at the throat of the splice where the bury is. The kink could be where those threads are stretched for the bury

Thanks N.e Tree, I did, and can see how that could be causing the kink. Guessing there is nothing that can be done to prevent?

Look up Brion Toss' instructions for the invisible stitch, looks great on Vortex...

I tried to order his book but they are out of stock and no ETA. Is the invisible stitch similar to a standard Samson lock stitch but going back in the same hole @ a different angle?

Might have to just do stitching instead of whipping and stitching. Marlow whipping twine is not cheap....

Some Yale Prism, kids picked the rope...

You use one of the cover strands to make the lock stitch

Gave it a go. Left one end attached at the eye. Did not have enough to make the 90 degree move and go back up toward the splice. Nothing to tie it off to so I just did a few more "back through the same hole at an angle" stitches then cut it off.

Was a bit of a challenge threading the needle and pulling the cover strand through the rope. Of course the black mark from the cross over ended up visible.....

I have had the same thing happen to me, Brocky! You have to give the eye a healthy tug, before you proceed to the final stages of burying the remaining core and sheath. Great call, nonetheless!

@Ragnar, thinking about it more, that is the side that the core gets buried on, perhaps that section of the eye gets kinked from the burying. Maybe tie a double constrictor knot around that leg of the eye just above the throat, to keep from distorting it.

Thanks Brocky, cant hurt to give it a try. Been trying to watch the formation closely. I start to notice it as soon as I bury the core inside the cover. It gets worse from there. I am not clear how the crossover could be causing this. I do seat the crossover pretty tightly, follow up with a few stitches, then massage it until its uniform and round.

In this pic, I have not trimmed the core excess off so its not the result of cutting the core short or the taper getting sucked back into the eye.

It does look like the N.e Tree might be correct as you can see the cover strands where the core exits the cover are right where the kink forms.

Looking at some online print splicing instructions, I do see the same kink in the illustrations so this could be normal/unavoidable. I may order a few pro spliced large eye split tails to see for myself (or maybe one of the experience splicers on here could try a larger eye to see if they get the same kink). The eyes I am trying to make take 16-20" of rope

Hey is it possible that when your burying the core it is getting twisted? I got the same kink when I did a large eye. Since the bury was so much longer than the tight eyes I did I only had a little bit of my fid left to grab the core and I got sloppy stuffing the core into the wire fid and it caused the core to twist as I fed it through. Because the tightest spot for the core to bury through was the entrance to the throat that's where the twist ended up and I was left with a kink at the end.

Edit: Just looked back at the last page and saw you already thought of this, my bad. Those leashes look sweet by the way! I gotta make some of my own

I have never spliced Cougar before and am curious why it would be so hard to bury. Is it tapered differently than other double-braids?
It's almost an exact copy of Yales 11.7's but the core has larger diameter strands and the cover is woven tighter so there's is less volume for a splice to fit. It's not that bad with some good tricks. Easier than Kernmaster and used Tachyon.
