Show off them splices

We are working on some splicing videos as we speak. Nick Araya flew in for the better part of a week and worked with Carson, me and the team for a few days. Mr. Araya does the teaching and Erik, head splicer at ABR does the demonstration in a real time, single shot.

Erik is talking about world speed records and thinks he can get the 11.7mm Class 1 DB down to around 6 minutes start to finish, <8 minutes with whipping. I have some teaser video coming soon! Pretty amazing stuff though.

I've got the class 1 db splice down to about 45 minutes and I don't think I'm gonna get any faster lol...without whipping. Can't wait for the video's
 
New removal lanyard I made this weekend. I took a pick of my "stopper knot" I make on all my lanyards since it's so much smaller than a knot and serves the same purpose, stop my hitch.
I just pull a smidgen of the rope out, cut it, fold the cover back, whip it, then nay nay.

Add long as you finished the whip wit a nay nay then you should be OK
 
Hey guys. I just wanted to confirm what I read earlier in the thread that the recipe for splicing 9.3 epicord is the same as the Samson Class 1 double braid instructions. It's that what everyone is using for epicord eye 2 eyes?

Any class 1 double braid instructions, Samson's does make a nice taper. 2/3 a fid for the bury.

I normally go with a full fids length for the cover, I've got several splices that I'm whipping & stitching as we text. I'll post a few pics later this evening. I got a bunch of 1/2",9/16",& 5/8" stable braid from another member, and I'm making a few rigging slings for something to do while it's raining. But Reed, you're correct, as if you didn't already know, 2/3 Fid length is the minimum. I also bury 8-9"s of core before tapering. I just like to have a little more of a crossover bury, for S***'s & Giggles! Personal Preference, I guess! [emoji848]
 
Thanks for the replies on the epicord. I will be doing a couple of eye 2 eye splices coming up. And thanks for this thread. I've learned a ton from it and really enjoyed reading it.

For now, here is the first splice I have ever done:

Well I tried anyways . . . I couldn't quite drive it home all the way. Since I've done this one I learned a few things: Tachyon is really hard to splice even if its not your first splice, and that I can take a mallet and hammer out the throat and then pull some more. So I will try that when I have some more time to work on it.

After I tried the tachyon I decided I should find something more my speed and played around with some tenex tec. Heres a whoopie and a couple of loopies.

The un-dyed areas are normal, as long as they're due to entrance or exits and not a pick or pull that unbalances the strands. That photo looks normal.

The 3 strand inner core of Tachyon does add some steps that don't exist in other DB lines, but I think a few things that will make ALL double braid splices easier are:
- solid grasp on the mechanics and visualization of the final product on the inside and out. (this understanding aids the entire process)
- quality taper.
- tight crossover. Toight like a toigah, and don't loose that tension during the bury.

From the photo, the Tachyon eye looks like it may have cover slack in it. Cover can result from a loose crossover, and leave the fibers of the eye unbalanced. This can make the bury tough, since the core gets tight before the cover reaches the eye size marks.
