Shorts

Okay, we all agree then. Firefighters are NOT heroes. No need for a new thread on that one. Whew!

Ted, I didn't miss your point, you may have missed mine. I was merely pointing out that there are many unseen hazards about our jobs. Wearing pants won't protect you from most of them.

And Caballos, it's not your fault, really. I mentioned shorts in the last post to bait the shorts-haters. I knew what I was doing. I'm glad this separate thread got started.

"You never know who you're talking to and what they may be thinking, so long sleeves and pants, in my opinion, show a client that even on a basic level I am aware of the small hazards that accompany my job and, I have protected myself from them by dressing appropriately."

This is a well thought-out response, and I can't argue it. However I will say that wearing chaps over shorts may stress the safety-oriented way of thinking more than chainsaw pants -the customer doesn't know your pants are "special." Since we don't know who we are talking to or what they are thinking, they might think you are slightly silly to be wearing long sleeves (forget the shorts) in full-on summer.

"Beware of all enterprises that require new clothes."

-Henry David Thoreau

I've taken on new enterprises that require new clothes and had success. 'Beware' can be interpreted in lots of ways.

A maybe forgotton but serious hazard wearing shorts and even short sleeves is the SUN. If we are harping on about how hot it is, too hot for long pants let alone chainsaw pants, then i hope you are lathered in sunscreen.

Melanoma KILLS. It is one of the most aggressive cancers. Get your skin/moles/spots checked. Our profession has a real high risk of over exposure to the sun.

Our summer temps here in F can run 100-110. Thats hotter than i've seen anyone else on here mention. Yet we would still wear chainsaw pants year round.

Caballos - as an employee your insight of the importance of business success is inspiring, love your attitude.

I bean wearin them here shorts for 22 years now...
Whenever I put these baby's on... I can cut faster, climb higher and look as professional as you pant wearin fools.
So, don't go hatin because I found the ticket to keeping cooler during the hottest of days.

ok then, what's next--climbing in a thong?
no i did nto mean that but...
Johnny Weismuller did ok in a loincloth, but that was staged.

Goode point by Trev--sleeves and pants = no cancer, no farmer's tan, less scratches and dirt, etc.
i get $2 longsleeve shirts from goodwill and look neat and safe and natty as you like.

I do wear nylon swimwsuit underneath so i can strip down to it and hose down midday. aaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

This is...this is....well I am seldom lost for words. Awesome in the literal sense of the word!

I think trevs comments re melanoma is the most compelling argument for staying covered. The Aussies are way ahead of us in NA in this.

NOW YALLZ TALKIN!!!!! Here is the final deathmatch, picture this......Huffman vs. Gibson in the end all be all bare hand barefoot footlock comp in thongs, with girth hitched tires on the ankles, wasted on buffalo juice (defined in this case as, molson and some fruit punch with alcohol)

I can't take credit for the insight, it's what I've learned from my employer and co-workers. But, the attituted is all me, thanks!

speaking of ventilation, i once was ~40' up a norfolk island pine in key west and went commando with shorts that day. client's kids kept looking up, wide-eyed, hollering 'Put some clothes On!" as if that was possible at the time.

could not shut them up or get them to leave. that was a lonnng job

hope the Statute of Limitations has expired for your sake Guyzer lol.

42 degrees celsius the other day with the humidex and I was wearing my chainsaw pants happily... Why? Because I don't have a choice, its the law here. Humble yourself with that.

Not really humbling, but glad I don't live in Canada for that reason.

Wore the shorts out today, 92°F, got trees off of two rooftops (storm came through the area on Wednesday). Felt nice to have the air down there, but had chaps on the whole time.

So that wouldn't be allowed in Ontario? No chaps with shorts? Specifically? Or chap-pants are required?

I have no problem with the chap pants. I own the Husqvarna and Stihl versions, even have a pair of the Gransford-Bruks. But not at this time of year. No thank you!

No that would be okay, the "law" just requires chainsaw protection while using a chainsaw.
