Short Rope Length?

Of the 4 climbing ropes that I keep on the truck, only one of them is a 120' the rest are shorts from Wesspur's clearance rope section.

The 3 shorts are primarily SRS ropes and the zigzag stays on the longer rope primarily for MRS on crane jobs. I do sometimes have to tie two ropes together, one is canopy anchored and another is tied on the retrieval leg. It's sometimes nice having the climb and retrieval leg different ropes when talking to ground guys.

Length is so dependent on ones individual work needs. I used to roll with 50'/100'/150' ropes years ago when I was in the city with huge diversity of species and types of work (the more experienced guys handled all the bigger trees at that time) and now I roll with 4 different 200'.... each in different bags so I can easily tell someone what to grab.

This is a good topic that has been on my mind after lots of crane work lately..... I get that rope length varies greatly by species/part of the world your working in etc. A couple weeks ago I had a whole day of crane removals, mostly two pic pines. It was super annoying having to fly with a whole bag of 150’ rope, and to re stuff it between each tree.... for me in Colorado I think I’m going to get a 75-80’ piece to keep on hand for these situations.

My shortest ropes are a 70' and a 98'. The 70' gets a lot of use. I have some 150s, a 200 and a couple of 300s. Not using an excessively long rope is beneficial IMHO. I almost never use a different rope as a retrieval leg for a canopy anchor, but as Jehinten pointed out, having different ropes for the retrieval leg and climb line has advantages.

We do lot of crane work as well, and I carry a 200’ rope always when I’m on the crane. To me, it’s a good safety plan - crane blows an engine while I’m 100’ in the air over nothing but pavement, I want to be able to get down without waiting for my ground crew to shoot throw balls at me in a vain attempt at sending me a longer rope.

Has this happened to you or anyone you know? I never considered it.

It has not, but it still consider it to be a possibility, so I plan for it. Cranes are mechanical, and therefore can break down. The long rope also allows for a quick bailout in case of bees or other surprises; I can bomb out a lot faster than the crane can lower me out of the way should I find a hornets nest up in the air.

I've had to throw to someone stuck in a lift about 50' up and I knew someone who was stuck in a boom at 70' but refused to rappel out. But your scenario had me wondering - what's the highest someone has encountered a hornet's nest?

Ten points if it makes a loud thud off his helmet!
