shoes

Try hiking boots. They're lighter, good ankle support, and usually waterproof. If you've used regular heavy work boots before, you'll really notice the weight difference. I guess there are some more shoe types, but I'm a boot person.

Wall Mart, the "Commander." About $40.

Yeah i had that problem too. I use hiking boots now for footlocking which works great. Only problem is if you stand in a narrow crotch with them the soft sole sqeezes your foot something fierce. So all I can say is either deal with that or learn on a good pair of logger boots.

Don't be hating...

two words for you walmart guys: Asolo or Merrell

Hey, you get what you pay for... sure $40 is not bad, but you will buy 3 pair of these to 1 good pair... an not be as comfortable in the mean time.....

Hey you know what i say "Go cheap on your shirts and underwear, and spend that extra money on boots and gear"

No offence to walmart, i buy everything else there /forum/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

I paid $150 on sale for my last pair of Asolos. I've been working the hell out of them for two years now and I love them. Still waterproof, still in one solid piece (I guess that would be two solid pieces, actually), still incredibly comfortable, but I've almost worn through the sole! Time for a new pair.

A lot depends on your feet._ I tried expensive boots-wore them out in a year. Found cheap hikers would last about 6 months and I could buy 3-4 pairs for the price of the better boots. I always had to try a lot of cheapies to find a good fit-when I found some that worked I'd try to buy multiple pairs-seems that the importers switch styles every few months on the ones that worked for me. My problem is that I started having some foot problems.... Bottom line... I have a narrow foot and to get a truly proper fit I have to buy good boots. I'm in Redwings now since they make something that actually fits me.

I'm in the hiking boot club too. Even if the money works out in favor of the cheap boots I can't stand soft soled boots. I like to edge my boots and not get stuck in v-unions.

I realized in high school when I was buying ski boots that my best fit was from boots made in Italy. The last that they use works best for me. This has proven true across the board with ski boots, light and heavy hiking boots and all of my favorite tree climbing boots.

When my boots get a little soft I'll add an insole to lift my foot up and fill the boot a bit better. Adding a good orthodic insole right off the bat can make a good boot feel great.

I generally wear a mountaineering/hiking type boot. Would it be ok to wear a shorter, lighter approach shoe for smaller thin bark trees?

[/ QUOTE ]On those trees when it's warm (which is most of the time here--70 degrees today) I wear Nike Aquasox; snug fitting mesh uppers and flexible curved soles.

But then I don't footlock or do big removals so that may be no help to the original poster (how soon we forget!)

I only use boots for removals w/spurs. Everything else, I like a gore-tex trail runner. Soft rubber is the way for me. I like feeeeling the branches beneath my feet on those long limbwalks. Plus the friction of soft rubber makes for excellent "lean backs". As for tight crotches , I really don't see the issue. I don't feel like I'm ever hanging in one spot long enough to feel any real pain. Oh yeah, and a light shoe is much less fatiguing. Of course my opinion is largely shaped by the fact that at 33 years of age I've spent more years of my life on a skateboard than off. Skate shoes are on my feet the second I climb out of the tree and into the truck.

Lacrosse boots work pretty well for me, not too expensive, very durable, still able to feel my feet and where they are, so i have no complaints. Dont really like the feel of the hikers, a little too short for this guy, plus you get a helluva lot more hitchhikers and that never made a climb fun
