Both Wescos & White's & Redwing have an option on the type of toe protection you can order.
Metal toes increase the transfer of heat and cold, AND will crush and hold (heaven forbid) your toes. So if you get a metal plate crashing down on your toes you will have to have them (your toes) cut off.

Their are plastic toe caps built into the boot that have just about the same strength as the metal toes but without the disadvantages of metal.

I use Danners for most removals because the vibrum sole is softer and I spend alot of time on pavement.

I'm not a fan of steel toe either, but I'd try to cut the sole off before I cut my toes.

I like to wear a type of boot more than a brand. I liked the Sportiva trango s. I also liked a Garmont tower. In fact, I just ordered a new version of the Tower with gortex. I like Scarpa as well. The boots I like the best are light, durable mountaineering type boots.

Wescos are great! Been using them for maybe 6 years now. On my third pair I think.

I tried many many types of logging boots.

I'm very hard on boots. My work is probably 70% removals, 25% trimming, 5% other.

Redwings are a decent boot, but honestly, I was wearing them out in 6 to 8 months. I mean, holes in the sides to the point I can't use them anymore.

Wesco boots last me 2 years usually. TWO years! compare that to 6 months. So they save me money actually.

Don't let the false horror stories of metal toes scare you. Most of them aren't true.

Did you see the episode Mythbusters did on steel toe boots? They show how well steel toes save you.

My Wescos with steel toes saved my toes this summer. Embarrassed to say, but I had a 6 to 8 inch diameter limb fall and spear the end of my boot, while my foot was on asphalt. Hit directly on the steel toe area. Split the leather where the steel toe ended. The force must have shoved the steel down into the rubber sole temporarily, cause it did smash my big toe a bit. My other toes were fine. But the big toe popped and split out the side a little. (like if you drop a tomatoe on the floor) No harm to the bone or the joint. Just busted the meat out a little. Also my toe nail cut into the end, which was good, cause it kept bleeding and letting out the pressure. Got 3 stitches. If I did not have the steel toe, I'm sure some of my toes would have been destroyed beyond repair.

I'm still wearing the same pair of boots. Wesco says to send them back and they will repair them. The steel might be ever so slightly bent down, but not really noticable.

I'll probably wear a lightweight hiking boot with all that nice rubber if I attempt to compete next year.

But for everyday work, I gotta go with Wesco. That lightweight stuff won't last me 1 or 2 months tops.

I like light also, I have been looking for something with a pointy toe. Something that has less leather or matierial thickness but the same required ancle support. This is kinda vauge so I'll post a pic someday day when I find what I'm looking for. You would'nt happen to kmow of something that looks like this would you Mark?

A good all around booot for me are mountaineering boots. I've found many good brands but for me la sportiva fit the best. You can look around and find a sale and try them out. If you don't like them then your not out a lot,but I'm sure you will, there great for support and traction, the stiffness will take some getting use to.
