SHipping costs, holy crap

I use padded envelopes for pulleys and its usually about $3. Did you use the flat rate boxes? When I'm shipping climbing lines in my own box it's around $25 but if I use the flat rate it gets it down to $12-$15 depending on which box I use.

I shipped 3 padded envelopes thru UPS because the line at the post office was a mile long and I have no patience. Cost me $12 per envelope and they had 1lb in them each. Shoulda just waited the post office out. Would have saved at least $6 per envelope.

Flat rate boxes are the way to go IMO. I remember a few years back buying some chains from the west coast. Was quoted $15 for 2 chains. I laughed and said the poor guy has no idea. 3 days later came these 2 flat rate boxes. The guy packed 2 20' chains in each box. Would have been well into $100 for ups and would have taken a week. USPS with their flat rates work out well for me until I get to the real big stuff. It's nice to know when you include shipping in your costs exactly what it will cost you to send something.

The envelopes have a weight limit and when you exceed that limit the price gets pretty stupid. For the same $12 I can ship 150ft of rope in a flat rate box. The small flat rate is around $6 which is perfect for small gear. A couple days ago I shipped 2 climbing lines to the west coast for $25 (shipped in separate flat rate boxes) and it was going to be $36 if I shipped them together in a larger box.

Thanks for the info on the flat rate boxes. I never looked into them just figuring that the envelopes would be cheaper. I have to ship more stuff tomorrow so ill definitely look at prices on them.
