Shark Gill Felling Cut

Haven’t seen Xman in a while. He used to post here quite a bit. Maybe he’ll chime in.

Saw your quick video on it then searched this one out. One of the ash stems starts to barberchair later in the video then the next “gill” breaks. I’m especially curious if it would improve hinging in dead oak or pine.

I skimmed the video.

Is it, simply put, multiple full-width hinges established by plunging through the tree?

AKA a variation in a triple hinge felling cut?

It does seem to slow the drop considerably. I'm gonna practice that and see how it works. Looks like a fun one to practice in a zero risk environment, though all my trees on my property hinge extremely well. On my gray pines, I have nearly perfected being able to keep the whole tree parallel to the ground, suspended on the stump, which makes dismantling a breeze. Here's an old one I haven't finished burning20240128_121115.jpg

Nice!
Have you played with the heights and/ or horizontal spacing of the bore cuts?
Not much. It's a super stringy species that hangs on like nothing else I know, so the key with this trick is just to make the back cut very slowly and get it to go over as early as possible. I was at least 30' away from this monster when it went over. As I started to back away at the first cracking sound. It had a bit of side lean, and I got it to turn about 20⁰-25⁰ before coming down, so the twist wrecked the butt there, but it did this with a super standard felling cut and a smaller hinge. I'll see if I can dig up the video; it was pretty sweet

Edit: man that was all the way back in '21! I can't believe how fast the time has passed. I'm hoping my friend still has the video.

I tried it for the first time today on a 13"ish Ash. It had back lean over my kids swinget. I used the Sark Gill and it worked perfectly. Next is a big Ash for my neighbor. Ill try to post some pics. Thanks for sharing this.

Trench cut is quick easy and very effective.. I go one step further when more control is needed.

only tried the shark gil once and wasn't mpressed with the results, but that doesn't mean much... I probably wasn't making it right...
