Shagbark Hickory preservation

*UPDATE*

So, some preliminary excavation with hand tools has revealed that the root flare is deeper than 15” down. The Superintendent is feeling like the project is hopeless. Do any of you have any experience/success stories with a restoration project like this? I’d love to find a way to convince the superintendent that there’s hope for success.

It's interesting to see those 1"-2" dia roots in that photo. Given their size, I'd imagine that they were there at a similar size before the backfill. Does anyone think those are new, post backfill adventitious roots?

I agree that it looks like it’s been buried a good while. That has me worried that this decline has been a long time coming. What about air sparing a drainage trench and installing a French drain?

Re reading my post I should have worded it along the lines that you did... Those roots were likely non existent above ground, previous to this project. Either the tree's root flare was already buried pre project, or perhaps they are incredibly vigorous adventitious roots that sprang up after the project which is unlikely given their size... Are there any pictures of the site pre project that you can compare?

I am not the OP, but I don't recall any pre construction documentation. Yea, at that size I really doubt they grew in the last two years.
