Selecting a TIP?

Hey Flash, I got it. I wasn't even thinking about your post but relating what I was taught when trying new techniques.

Jerseygirl do you production climb or rec climb? Because not many rec climbers climb dead trees. Last vid I saw of yours it was slightly windy and you just sort of sat there. No offense, just curious?!?

Yes - I am a rec climber and I can pick a live tree to climb versus dead tree. what does my climbing have to do with the question?

leaf buds, growth activity, staying close to the trunk, setting a line over several limbs, that is what we all do.

now you know why i deleted my original post - did you not like my answer or do you think i am not quailified to answer?

Do you have a pair of binoculars? Take a look at the top of the tree and the limb you think would be your TIP. If you still feel uneasy about it then as above look for a larger limb then work your way up to a better secure TIP.

Hey FT, maybe the cold has you feeling a bit sensitive. My rule of thumb when reading posts is to assume it is being said in a positive manner. Then always respond with humor and good grace. If it was meant with malice then that will be clarified for you.

Dave, maybe the question that is being inferred is how much experience and/or training do you have? Is this particular job beyond the scope of that?

Low and slow is the motto for doing new things.

Best advice, right there. No reason to hurry, no reason to go for a high TIP that may be suspect.

[/ QUOTE ]I agree, and I got a busted top in the water oak across my pond to prove it. Some yahoo tied into a 1 3/4" branch.

Just yankin ya chain dude.

Tie the end of your climbing line around the base of the tree, once you've gotten the shot you want. Then take a footlock on the single line not attached to the tree. This will double your weight in force at your TIP. Watch the way the branch reacts. This should be the most force the TIP is subjected to. Granted you don't take a major fall into your system while working.
This is not fool-proof, but does give me a little reassurance now and again!! If I'm really questioning it, just go low and slow!!! as mentioned above!! Good luck my friend

Familytree, I just asked that as a general guestion. I am sorry if you had a bad day and read what I wrote as in a way of starting something but um' you have it all wrong man!! It is helpful to know how long someone has been climbing in order to answer their question better.

You know what jeremy, it didn't even have much to do with your post, I was reading backlog after backlog of posts and threads by other members and realized that there was so much bullshit that it was extremely difficult to get facts from the thread. That's when I happened across your posting. Do I agree that knowing how long someone has been climbing is helpful, yes. Am I wrong for thinking that your post was more in mean spirit then to be helpful, apparently so and for that I apologize.

After reading so much crap I just started to clump it all together and that stuck out. I do apologize, but I'm not wrong in my thinking towards the bigger picture that recently this site has been more bickering then helping. It has been much better since a certain somebody has been removed (or possibly took a break from all the hate and the Internet in general)

Rob, go f yourself, how's that for sensitive and yes I'm freezing (that was of course a joke, eh look at me I'm a jokester, this would have been a lot more funny of a statement if sarcasm translated well via text, that way I wouldn't have to break down the punch line.

Again, woodland (jeremy) I do apologize. My bad man. We can drink this off come march 15th.

In his absence, should I post some youtube links that barely have anything to do with the subject at hand?

Maybe I could misspell some key words and call out anyone who dares to be proud of their certifications.

Dang, I do miss that fool.......

What would Stephan know about being straight? Just because I don't have any vices doesn't mean I don't have some really annoying virtues.

I didn't tell Jim anything about how easily you piss people off. I guess your reputation precedes you.
