saw for hire tv show?

At the beginning the SFH flap I sent what was printed as a letter to about 250 people. I've heard back from some people that they got it as a forward.

Who knows if the original note, and call to action, or my email had anything to do with SFH being taken off and possibly reshuffle? TLC apparently got 7,000 responses. It would be interesting to find out how many comments they usually get from a show.

What is more important is that if there is going to be a change on the streets the movement needs to be on the streets. ISA and TCIA already do a lot of consumer education. Unless you talk to the people who do the education work at the two organizations you'll never know how much goes on behind the scenes. They both do work that is never credited back to them.

The next step is for anyone who cares about proper treework to take the energy that is being spent here and hit the streets. Get articles written in weekly newspapers. Get hold of your kid's schools and see if you can do an Earth Day pruning demo. Then, as payment, have the kids take home a flyer in the sheaf of papers that they drag home. The kids will learn about the cool job of an arborist. Why is our profession so invisible? If a kid in grade school/junior high sees and arborist it is likely that they'll remember that a professional is needed to take care of their trees when the grow up and need treework. Their parents need your sevices NOW.

Good post Tom!!

And just what makes a professional?? Having certs??? I'd say more but I'll just let it go cause you know how I feel bout them.

Do you consider yourself to be a professional Hollen?

What criteria or standards are expected? Some are pretty low...getting paid to do the work makes a person a professional by some standards, ask the IRS.

By definition gettting paid to do a particular job makes that ones profession.Doing it professionaly is entirely different matter though.Certifacation is great,I have several different ones (arborist, climber specialist, oak wilt specialist and thinking about getting Board certified and ctsp).I promote certification at my company,I had one employee pass his CA and another pass the tree workers this pass year.Do these programs promote professionalism, yes but its really up to the individual to mantain it.Can you be a true professional without being certified of course.Just like you can be certified and have no professionalism. It all depends on your true motivation and what you do when no ones looking.Bottom line we have to practice what we preach and strive to mantain the highest standards possibly. Not just being eye pleasers when others are watching or putting on the great facade to get praise or paid.

I had a chance to meet the guy behind the controversy:

He said that TLC will be airing the last two shows, but he wasn't sure when.

You can tell it's authentic by the bluetooth in Nosak's ear.

No wait, where's the walkie-talkie that's supposed to be hanging from his cut-off shirt?

Maybe this is a fake.

Tom, I'd love to talk to the individuals involved in the education work. What they do have on the ISA site is great but what I question is why they aren't taking a more proactive approach and seeking ways to further communicate and educate the public.

NJ Garden Show, the Shade Tree Foundation was there. At a show like this is what one could refer to as the "low hanging fruit". Easy pickings to get the message across. Have someone do a presentation at the show. There's the big Philly flower show coming up. Let's see if they have anyone doing anything there.

Where'd you hear that Andy?

Truth is it did indeed happen. Paul Nosak didn't know the name of the guy, but he did say that it happened.

Jamin, he showed up at the TCIA WMC after being asked by ISA and TCIA to come and discuss things in person. They all viewed his last two episodes and had some discussions. Paul didn't make it to any of the seminars, but did come to the last dinner. That is where we took the photo.

He told me that most were cool to him, but a few let him have it.

He has posted on his forum about the shirt thing, for the most its quite hard to make out what his point is, but i reckon he was pretty angry when typing.

My own opinion on Paul is, I have respect for the guy who can market himself and make something from nothing, isn't that the American dream?
However as an arborist i have to say, i wish he had made his show about the roofing industry.

Like many have said, hopefully if the shows continue a more mature and realistic aspect will be portrayed. after all he claims most of the bad stuff we see is drama, hammed up for the cameras.
I have to agree with Mark tho, I'm not sold on that either.

Paul showed up. Okay.

Did his publicist tell him it would look good for him to do so?

My observation with that photo is this: It is suspicious to me that he is wearing his stage helmet, stage glasses, and stage shirt. I'm wondering if he drove his stage vehicle as well...

If I were under heat, from the people in this industry, I would not want to "stand out" in the crowd with my stage clothing. It would fuel the fire.

As I am sure it did with the guy who trampled on his shirt. LMAO.

Here's a good definition, Holly:

"Profession (n): A capable body of individuals, who, using a carefully scripted and described body of knowledge, use that knowledge to advance society's interests rather than private interests." (From the original definition of curriculum for business schools teaching management as a profession.)

Looking at the larger picture in this country, I would contend that this ethic has been abandoned in most industries.

Also, weren't you offering to lend someone a CA Study Guide last week? What are you doing with that book LOL?
