Samson Ultratech for prussik Eye & Eye

Given the apparent concerns of aramid fibers failing on various bridge configurations is there any reason to be concerned about using them as prussic cords?

I've got some Samson Ultra-tech and also have seen Sherrills selling ultra-tech eyes&eyes but, as mentioned, am worried about possible failure issues.

Pros? Cons? Other thots?

How about running the technora core 100% naked. What sort of problems would that invite, if any?

I've been on a grizz spliced Ultra Tech cord from sherrill since the fall and its great cord. I was worried about burning up the cover but it is holding up just fine. I'm a light climber(145 without gear) that may have something to do with the wear. That being said I don't untie my hitch when I put away my rope so it has been wearing in the same place for the last couple of months and I see no problems with the cord.

I used to use UltraTech as a prusik.

I dont mind the idea of a bit of cover wear. Yes it won't hold up to rapid descents, but thoughtful general use can be a good cord.

The benefit if you can look at it this way is, you will likely replace it sooner due to wear than something thats cover does not cook.

I pulled apart a retired ultratech, still have it here actually, and were amazed by the internal, hidden deterioration of the core, shocked that that was what i were climbing on.

So if you use a cord with an almost indestructible cover, you might be inclined to use it longer than the hidden, un-inspectable, life dependant core is good for.....

Good advice. I've been on an ultra-tech eye and eye since July but I'm not climbing steady right now. I like the way it feels til it breaks in but then the cover glazes a little and I have to rotate the cord where it mostly hits my line or change hitches to satisfy this. I'm generally a little suspicious of core wear after disecting a prussik that I'd retired to light rigging aps and found a surprizing amount of wear.

so given the tendency of the aramid fibers to self destruct what makes Ice tail so preferred? Is it because the fibers are exposed and wear can be seen? Or is it because of the blend of materials?

I think the best thing to do is call Samson directly and ask for their reply.
It does have a looser weave than the Atlantic Braids 5/16's" 16 strand 'Tech16'. Plus, the core fibers of each strand (Ice) are polyester, which will make a slight difference.

ThanX Norm,

I've got an email into Samson on some other questions, including the Ultra-tech out to the samson team.

I wasn't aware that Icetail has polyester, according to Samson it is a technora blend but no mention of poly. Is there another rope called ICE? I know that samson has some sort of cover with the name Ice in it and I think that is polyester.

Thanks Norm.

I find it interesting that they would do that. Aside from adding bulk or shape I can't see the purpose of doing that in the center of each strand.

Any idea their purpose for the polyester?

From what I was told by a Samson Rope rep, "To keep the weight and cost down."

Hold a piece of 'Tech12' and a piece of 'Ice', of equal diameters, and you will feel the difference.
