Safety freak!!

Way to go Jeremy.

I used to get called Safety Sean by my conservation corps crews. I'll take that any day over Reckless Sean.

Keep up the good work. This type of professionalism is what pushes the industry/ profession forward, and separates the pro's from the rookies. Your crews' families appreciate it, even if the fellas may feel like its overboard.

Many, many times over the years I've heard and read, in a VERY dismissive tone, that TreeBuzz is 'too much about safety and all that..."

Wow! Thanks :)

Great moniker!

I'm what many people would consider a 'safety freak'. But the flipside of that is that I have essentially given up trying to save other people from themselves.
Just today walking home from work I watched a landscaper on the top of an extension ladder cutting off branches and having them smash into his ladder when they hit the ground. I have had so many bad run-ins with people who are basically Darwin-Awards-waiting-to-happen!
What is it about tree work that makes random jackasses think you don't know what you're talking about and they have it all figured out?!? It's like I am insulting thier manhood or something to offer up experienced help!
Through learned experience I no longer get involved when I see potential accidents waiting to happen, so do I still qualify as a "safety freak"?

"if you know what's going on, you shouldn't have to wear a hard hat"

"I need to be able to hear so i don't wear earplugs"

"chaps are too hot"

"these glasses are always foggin up"

"its green, can't we just back cut it and pull with the tractor"

"isn't that overkill? tying into that...."
....and so on.

I'm starting to buy into Natural selection. Keep up the good work jeremy.

Congrats to you Jeremy, keep up the good work. If people are labeling you, that means they're noticing you.

I have been laughed at for being safe, which I really don't get.
I was at the CTSP meeting in Baltimore, and Tom D said his co-workers made fun of him for wearing a hard hat. This attitude of "I don't need that or I've done it this way for years and I ain't been hurt yet" is so common in this industry.

I have also been denied or not called for being "To Safe to Work with", on the other side I've been asked to assist because I'm safe.

I guess some think working safe cuts into profits.

Did I say that?

Congrats! I'm the only one who wears a hardhat at the company I work for except on rare occasion. Yep the too hot, can't hear, too uncomfortable, etc... Heard em all. People don't want to sweat or be uncomfortable. If only they knew how uncomfortable an injury is.

Was talking to a guy about a sub contract opportunity and he says "My regular climber is the fastest I've ever seen (gushing for minutes about his great climber), yeah, he was gonna compete at that TCC they had - woulda won it too, but he found out they have all these rules about knots you're supposed to know and hardhats and all that so he just blew it off."

THOSE are the guys I'd like to see at a climbing seminar.

Needless to say, that company won't have a chance to see me climb as a sub.

I have had the unfortunate pleasure of finding myself in the company of quite a few doctors in my day...not due to tree related things, just run of the mill run ins with life in general..anyway, whenever they ask me what I do for a living I tell them I climb trees. Well, they invariably respond with "you do wear a helmet, right?" I say yes and they say, "good, we see so many senseless head injuries that could have been avoided."

Hmmmmm. Nope, wasn't me. A little picky maybe, but never anal.
I'll bring that hank of lighting for you to gear check. You wanted 150' right??
Give you that little "extra" safety edge.

Everyone..be safe

reminds me of the time i was subcontracting stump grinding in Virginia after Isabel. The foreman was flush cutting stumps with a 066 and a pair of sunglasses.. I was grinding with safety glasses, a helmet with muffs and face shield, and a respirator.. as the foreman was pulling out, he rolled down the window and said "ain't that respirator a little overkill?". He had that look on his face, like look at this guy in all his rediculous PPE... Never did get paid for the work.

Then last week at arborday, they were laughing because I got out of the truck with my chaps on.. what can I say.. I was stuck in traffic and grabbed em out of the back seat... had 11 trees down and out before lunch..

Im doing a job along a major highway this week. DOT engineers the whole works.
On the other side of where we were working a local "company" was takeing trees down...litterallacross the street. Of course we haad all PPE including dot vests...They had shoes socks and shorts...not sure about there underwear...and thats it. At the end of the day I walked across to talk with the owner(Who I know). Still had my Hivis kask on and he asked me if I was going for a bike ride with my helmet....I said maybe but Ill be sure to have a helmet on if I do
