Rope Wrench Setup, Zero Drop

...Do y'all find yourself switching between techniques (SRT and DdRT) often?
I don't really do it at all. I'll climb one way or the other, unless it's crane work or (I can only imagine) an extended, epic West Coast Conifer exploration. It really all depends on the type of situation one encounters, or ultimately, how often you'd need to relocate your Tie In Point/Primary Support Point.

You can prune and remove all in SRWP systems without changeover. If you're working off a crane, or alternating systems up a larger conifer, you'd probably want the convenience of DdRT retrieval/advancement.

In a prune, the capabilities provided by simple false redirects are incredible, whether retrievable or not. These options are really what makes SRWP shine in my opinion. Without them, things may actually be more difficult.

Best thing is to know the options, then approach the work with the best kit for the task.

I'll finally get to try some of these RW tweaks/tips... I broke down today and ordered a RW and 24" 8mm Epicord E2E and the Sterling tether. I already have the ISC pulley they make for the RW, bought that when they had them marked way down. Also have the ISC mini-HMS 'biner. Whole works should be highly color coordinated with some red shrink tube on the tether.

I'm going to play with it all, to start out, on a static 13mm nylon kernmantle (48-strand) before I buy another rope for it on Friday. I don't know if the 8mm Epicord will play nice with that rope (probably not) but I can at least fiddle with the setup at 4' off the ground until the new rope comes. So, here's my question for you guys with RW experience...

With that setup, my goal was to keep the thing as compact as I could... distel, knut or something else that works well in a compact form on a 24" (sewn eye) prusik cord. I'm thinking about Cherry Bomb for the rope, as the price point is right for my budget this week. Anyone have thoughts on whether this setup will lean more towards sweet or shit when I throw it together? Am I overly optimistic about this rope choice? Which knot will likely work best?

I tip the scales at about 200 lbs. without a saw onboard, but geared up normally for a removal... 16" lineman boots and spurs.

My intent is to use the SRT setup for access only to start out, and ease into using it for positioning. I have foot ascender and SAKA already.

It will be safer than what's in your avatar pic;).. The 13 mm static will be a little less sweet with the 8mm than that cherry bomb for srtwp.Wrench makes good friction.Takes work off the hitch ,but 13 mm static to 8 mil epi may bite hard.. if you r just for access static good ..work position can be good cherry bomb probably better . Overall sweet shit is my synopsis.

Yeah, I figured the 13mm wasn't going to work out great, but the Cherry Bomb I think is 11.5mm so should work. I was worried mostly that somebody had tried the Epicord/All Gear combo and it didn't play well together. Thanks, Treetopflyer. I'm hoping I won't have to switch to some green rope, or something. The colors would clash, and my fashion sense wouldn't allow it. :vomito:

I will never ever ever consider an 8mm hitch for a primary system ever ever again after trying the 10mm, now 9mm hitches....for MY weight. I'm usually 200, but just got on a scale yesterday and I was 195 in clothing, so I was actually kind of psyched, because I'm actually feeling rather chipper.

Point being, a lot of lighter weight climbers are finding good luck with 8mm hitches, and I ised to struggle with them binding and getting me all upset. Maybe I didn't know enough at the time (probably), but once I got on a 10mm, it was a great experience.

For your weight, I would seriously recommend a 4/1 or 5/1 Michoacan with sewn epiCORD around 26" to 28", respectively.

I don't know how many more times I'll say it, but here I go again anyway.

Best of luck getting into your SRWP Kit. The more you try to work during your ascent, including limbwalks and such, the more you'll start get into it.

Cheers, man!

I splice hitch cords regularly for the local arbs here and my first question is how much do you weigh? Then what hitch do you prefer? On what rope? Then, Rope Wrench? Which model? Or DdRT (yes, people still do that ;-) ). If they are close in weight to myself, 175 out of the shower, then I usually recommend ice tail or 10 mm AP. I usually don't recommend 8mm unless they are under 145. I have a couple friends who can run 8mm on Vortex under the ZK1 with no problem (lightweights!)

So, we're very close to the same weight. You're saying 10mm hitch on 11.5mm line? I can order a 9mm one, but I want to try the epi. I didn't see any 10mm. I have a 10mm Beeline one I can try, off my hitchclimber setup that I haven't used since switching to the ZZ.

A 4/1 Michoacan is one of the hitches I wanted to play with, I had seen a post somewhere from a guy who liked that one with the 8mm, 24" on a RW and 11.5mm rope and loved it. Also want to play around with the Knut. The lengths you give seem right on for the larger cord. Thanks! Checking my notes, I didn't write down the guy's weight, so he might not have said what he weighed in the post. Most of my notes I was trying to pay close attention to that.

Oh, and I just rode EpiCord 9.3 yesterday as a 3 coil Knut on Cougar and I was in heavenly bliss, so nice!

Good info! Thanks!

OK, so looks like I need to order another E2E cord.... *sigh*

But, everyone is cool with the All Gear rope... the Cherry Bomb? No scary shit I should know, like the core falls out and the mantle unbraids itself on the 3rd day?

Quick question, does the RW1 have more or less friction than the RW2? I'm on the RW1 and curious. I'm aware the 2 has a bollard, but I'm not sure it's adjustable. I hope I'm not too off topic here.

Keen to hear about the All Gear rope.

cheers, a 10mm fanboy for my 180 nakkie

Thanks, JohnKays... I just didn't see it when I was looking at the stuff... was right there above the ones I was looking at... sheesh...
