Rope bags

What do you guys use? Whats your favorite go to bag? I don't use rope bags, but I am converting....slowly.

I tried the CMI bag, but it wouldn't stand up while I flaked in the rope.

I wont be wearing the bag in the tree, just a storage bag to be deployed at the base of the tree. Need something tough/durable though, as I move my gear around a lot. Easy to flake into as well!

Maybe the new bag and new rope combo wasn't working in my favor? Another shot for CMI?

Metilous rope bags, both the back pack version and the roll up tarp version, are pretty sweet. I have the back pack, and Dad has the tarp version, both are very durable.

The HC rope bags sold at Wesspur are pretty sweet. Designed by a tree climber to be extremely durable. Can be tossed out of a tree forever and it won't bust. The cord that seals the top is a chainsaw pull cord, so if one breaks on the job you have a replacement handy. Its designed to stand up even when empty, so its easy to flake rope into.

EDIT: I must be tired; wrote this and didn't even notice rangerdanger had just said the same thing; read no further, just know I second his assessment. END of EDIT.

I bought a bunch of the bags Robert Moore (Hobby Climber) was producing. He sold the design to Wesspur; see the HC Rope Bag at:

They are nice bags, and have survived repeated tosses out of trees and life in the back of the truck, and countless other insults; all-in-all great bags.

Some ropes are in generic bags just to have them in bags.

When I want a workhorse bag I have New Tribe bags. They originated the stand-up bag. The HC bag seems like a good one too.

Bull,

With your champagne tastes

I'd wait for the new Buckingham bags made from the same material as the "Buck Tube"

The material is tough, provides protection from the wet sloppiness of spring, summer thunderstorms and melting snows.

I am not sure if they are available yet, but you got strings to pull.

Bull and Tony, the new bags from Buckingham are now available.

I bought one at NE Grows a couple of months ago. Very strong and durable, but I still think that it's a little too big for crane work, even though I know that you said you weren't going to be climbing with it.

Tony,

You have it all wrong.....I like quality ;)

just looking for a nice stiff bag, easy to stuff into without it falling all over itself like a drunk college freshman, and isn't $100. (See Tony, no champagne taste!). I checked out my buddies Weaver bags and they arent much stiffer than the CMI, that HC bag looks promising. I am also getting in some Petzl R41 bags, see what those are like.

The Metolious bags are nice, but those are pretty baller! $$. And the whole rope tarp idea......im too lazy to deal with those.

I second Toms opinion, I have a bunch of the 10 dollar bags from baileys for all my "secondary" ropes, but my 4 main ropes are all in New Tribe bags. Best bags Ive ever had. Bombed out of trees at 80+ feet a few times, bombed out of the bucket truck, kicked around on the ground, theres no tougher bag out ther IMHO. No disrespect to other bags, but these things are phenomenal. All of us at Knot and rope use them, and I think treedoclang just bought one too, they are really well made.

(Oh, and they stand up well too.)

I got ones for you Jim. Try bass pro shops if they have them up your way. I got some killer boating bags that are great rope bags. About 15 bucks. They stand up pretty well to feed rope they are water proof, draw string closure. For $15 they are the tits.

Those aren't too big Bull, I'm not sure that 150' would fit in one. It might. I had one of their backpack haulbags, best pack I've ever used until it flew out of a helicopter basket.

I've always used these little duffles. They can't fall over, they're tough and cheap. I've got a few that I've had for 4 years of constant use. The small size fits 150' of 1/2" easily and up to 250' and the medium will hold 200' of 3/4". They've also got a single zip pocket that is nice for gloves or whatever.

I'm sure there are other similar bags sold by a american store.

Bull,

Just because you are on a beer budget does not mean you do not have champagne taste.

That is the essence of quality, in my feeble mind anyway!!

I used to like the waxed cardboard boxes that returnable beer bottles came in. They had nice two sided lids, held a lot of rope and stacked nicely. I always seemed to have many of them around for some reason. . .

Alas, I can no longer find my beloved Yuengling porter 16oz returnable (or as we used to say reloadable) Bottles and the oh so useful boxes!

I'm cheap! I use 35# cat litter buckets. They stand up, hold 150 feet of 1/2 inch rope, stack in the truck, have a tight attached lid, a convienient handle, and keep the rope dry. They don't cost anything if you have a friend who has cats, and you keep plastic out of the landfill. You can use them for all types of gear besides rope. The only draw back is they don't toss out of a tree too well, tend to shatter a little on impact.
