Rooting live oak cuttings

Does anyone know anything about rooting live oak cuttings?

There is an important tree on campus that I would like to propagate just in case the worst happens.

For the past three years I've been gathering, germinating and potting acorns. This works and I would like to try and keep the same genes going from this special tree.

Hi Tom
Both Dirr and Plant propagation both suggest acorn prop.Acorns placed in water, those that float discard.

If you want to try cutting here is more info.

Plant propagation Hartmann, kester, Davies
stock selection is key and its preparation
July (Florida) semi hardwood cuttings 2 to 3”
Quick dip 12 000 ppm \k-IBA rooting under mist 7 to 9 weeks
Girdle or banding of below intended cut (zip tie) and treat with Auxin,
Sucrose and fungicide is said to increase rooting 76%
We used black zip ties effectivey on most anything. Snug with slight indentation( boot lace tight).

There are other techniques for banding and you might want to find a local nurseryman for more precision or mb even to help hold them thru till the end of rooting

Thanks for the info!

Dirr's is one book that has eluded my capture, The Man Who Planted Trees is not! it sits next to The Little Prince in my library :)

My laptop is in surgery so I'm using my phone and thumb typing for a few days. After the organ transplant (the wireless card died) I'll expand on this project

When the Treaty Oak was poisoned, there was a rush to try to clone it from cuttings. To my knowledge, only one out of dozens produced a tree, which last I heard is still growing in a yard in Travis Heights. The cuttings were taken after the tree appeared to be recovering, so most of the poison was probably flushed, but it still may have had an impact on the results. Contact John Giedraitis at TFS. He will remember more about it.
