In my experience, quite a bit of the "poor" aren't so because of an income problem. Rather, they have an outgo problem.
I see no reason I shouldn't be able to keep what I earn, let you keep what you earn, and let those who earn nothing be motivated to take care of themselves. Forced charity through taxation is morally meaningless, and it's been proven the government is a persistent failure at doing so with any efficiency, anyways.
Mind you, I have no issue with seeing folks get help who have come upon temporary hard times (or those either born or who become disabled, and simply can't); we've surely all been there to some extent at some point in our lives, and there's no shame in it. But the present system breeds generations of abusers of the public charity to the extent that groups of people have forgotten how to earn their own way and reward. We constantly level the playing field by lowering the bar, not raising it.
We spend more tax dollars now than ever on government programs to fight poverty, yet it exists in record levels. Right now nearly half of all Americans are on food stamps. Of course, if we simply took those same tax dollars and sent a check... We could send every single man, woman, and child about $20,000. Again... Government efficiency at work.
And then there's "social security", that government-enforced pyramid scheme which is nothing more than forcing one to be charitable to ones' self. We force away money from those without the wherewithal to make their own plans for retirement care and income, and include as punishment those who could put the money into far better investment options of their own choosing.
The left constantly whines about the rich paying their fair share, yet forgets about the quid-pro-quo. I paid a little over $23,000 last year in federal income tax- fully 7 times the average person. Did I get 7X more police protection? Fire services? Do I get exclusive access to 7X more roads than someone who paid no taxes at all? I certainly don't get to cast seven votes in elections instead of just one. Why should you get to decide I've made enough money and should be punished through taxation for my success? Why not punish you through taxation for failure?
No, jomoco- you will never understand the conservative mindset, because you believe too much in having your cake and eating mine, too.
