RI CDL

I know there's a bunch of folks here from Rhode Island. Can any of you guys tell me what's involved with getting a CDL in this state. I've heard some horror stories. We have a 23.5 ton crane that I will be needing to drive. Any pointer's are appreciated.

The 'instructors' basically reserve the right to fail you at any given point throughout the test. There are dozens of little things that they can cite as point deductions, but if they 'like' you, they just leave the deduction blank and go to the next part of the test.

There is a class (at least there was when I took it in 1992) offered at CCRI that prepares you for both the written and driving portions, I highly recommend it.

During the driving portion, DO NOT hit the cone on the right hand turn (I've heard that it's an automatic fail, and it happened to my brother), and also keep in mind that you can take pull ups in the parallel parking for little or no deduction, definitely less than hitting the cone. Also, be as thorough as possible with the walk around inspection and air brake portion of the test.

There's also some weird thing about not shutting the truck off until they say so. And don't forget to chock the wheels!

Expect a good deal of BS. The folks (state employees) who do the testing can be cranky and rude. Bring a smile, be polite and be prepared. The pre-trip inspection will make or break your test. Know your truck and have it clean inside and out for test day. Lastly....don't be discouraged if you don't pass on your first attempt, lot's and lot's have to return for a second attempt. Good luck!

Another thing, if you know that you'll need endorsements like air brakes in the future, do it all at once. In RI you have to re do the whole test for any upgrade. They are cranky and mean and most likely corrupt so be prepared and patient.
