I think it was "Roachy" that came up with the idea,
I made the illustrations from his descriptions.
I agree, it is a lot of hassle, though clever.
There are a few other tricks if you wanna lower the
RG with style...
One is to bring a small bag of throwline up the tree.
After you've installed the RG just tie the throwline to the
ring and toss the bag over a limb.
Perhaps even simpler is just when you start retrieving
the RG, make a toss with your throwline (from the ground)
over a fairly high branch. Let the bag drop close to
the pulling side of your climbing line. Clip a carabiner
to the throwbag and clip it over the climbing line.
Pull the throwline up, pull on the climbing line to get
the RG out and then lower the whole thing with the throwline.
Ok, it sounds more complicated than it is.
A good thing about this method is that you can deploy
it at any time, your splice and retrieval-ball may even
be on its way up to the RG.
