Retrenching Cracked Oak

[ QUOTE ]
everyone's hankering to make quick bucks dumping Merit in the dirt

Yeah, I "dump" Merit in the dirt, but I'd rather do that than let a magnificent tree die an undignified death. This pic is from the Smokies from October of this year.

Thanks Tom--good plan, lag-bolting, even several, does sound better that going all the way through. More sapwood, less heartwood, better codit? I'll need a fresh can of starter fluid to keep that old drill of yours going.

Needless to say, the work includes root invigoration. Under the deck will get vertical composting and irrigation.

biv, close but no cigar. The ENTS are on another mission.

riley, I didn't say anything negative about treating adelgids, did I? Kill every one of those buggers, please!

I'll get the root work done later this week.

Great, thanks.

The thread is about retrenchment, cutting back old trees to vigorous growth--anticipating decline and heading it off, so to speak. The challenge is to get pics with a clear background to illustrate the process.

Is the difference in the shriveled buds removed and the plump buds left visible? It sure is when up close, in cutting position.

O and there was NO way to make good cuts on these sprawling ends without a long polesaw.

Coronet cuts would not have met the goals on this job.
