Here is a mechanism that has the potential for being cross-converted.

Retractable leash

Each lead is 3m/9'so there could be two saw lanyards made. They claim 100# strength. More than enough for smaller saws.

Any other MacGuyveresque thinkers out there!?

I remember a stihl commercial saying : 'a mans best friend aint his dog'

maybe the dogleash is a great thing for your best friend....but just like Treespotter I have to say the tool that JF1962 brought up is the real thing ;-)
 
The cobra lanyard is what I have for my saw up in palm trees, it can handle a small echo saw , it you go to the site they have different one .. The dog leach lanyard is a good one . Will try and post a pic of saw lanyard..

Hey Tom , My safety rep at work gave me one about 1yr ago and it works great , she got at some safety seminar , I'll ask her if she has dealer here in the states .. Will get back to you .. The one I have is a older model and its a little beat up now , but it still works ,,
