Redwood Issues

A very good point, sometimes we’re too ’longtermist‘

Man that one stings. I have been on both sides of that story already in my short career. I like @evo 's idea with the message in a bottle! I would be so stoked to find a message detailing work done and dates, kind of like those work logs in port-a-potties.

Luckily, this one is at a nursing home, so I don't see the ownership changing suddenly, as it has been the same for decades, and the guy who hired us has been the maintenece guy there for many years, and in talking with him, he thinks the way we do about long term mainenence.

I’ve had more than one of my ‘pet’ trees turned into a stump after the house sold.

With it being a nursing home there can be more permanence yet at the same time, managers may change their minds or the old folks might win with their complaints.
I work for a retirement condo, and I’ve noted how personalities and folks giving in to the whiners eventually get their way.
They have a hedge row of Norway maples, 3/4 of which should be removed and replaced at 1/4 density of planting spacing. We started a removal replacement taking out the worst of the worse with the intent to replant.
That hasn’t happened and all the folks with fixed incomes are pinching Pennys

Frankly, this redwood should never have been planted there. A Sequoiadendron giganteum would have done a lot better, and without all the extra watering. There are so many of these sempervirens planted in this area, and I have been told by an old arb from this area that they are nearly always the Aptos Blue. They often get planted at 3'-6' spacing for privacy hedges. I have explained to many clients that a fast growing tree is a high(er) maintenence tree, and if they want lower maintenence costs, they should plant a slow growing species, like our local Blue Oak. Unfortunately, people see these slow growing species as scrubby and ugly. I really just wanna work with plants not people.

Wow 3-6’ for a redwood? Are they trying to make a wall of wood?
The blues are a little more bushy shorter and more brittle than normal redwoods?
Here folks get the cute little sequoia and plant it within 10’ of their home…

It is super clear that they aren't thinking almost at all about it, not anything about any aspect other than some notion that redwoods are associated with concepts they like the sound of. I have to control myself from freaking out every time I see these things.

Everyone who was there guessed between four and eight feet between the stems at the cabling location. It was only a 16" gap. So glad you guys told me about the wire stops or I definitely would have gone up with the wrong hardware. They are pretty fucking neato, and probably all I will use for basic cabling now. I worry that the tree is beginning its decline as there was a big flush of epicormic sprouts all the way up and down to about 15' off the ground. I did get to weave a few branches between the leads; look forward to inspecting those in a few years.
