Well here is a job I did today at a wealthy customer's villa, overlooking our " gold coast". Owner wanted back his view of the horizon, " forcing " me to liontail his " shak Shak tree " and believe me this tree will be done again next Xmas. Just wanted you folks to see what I am up against living in a tropical paradise. These folks get what they want and my family has to eat so I am sometimes backed into a corner. Luckily tropical trees are very resiliant to over pruning and tend to spring back fast. I am prepared to take criticism, but the pictures are for your enjoyment as I know you are starting in for a long winter. Paul.

Now here's the beach and fishing village opposite where I pick my groundies up in the morning.

Enough pictures of the trees. They look like the oaks do around here. How about some beach bunnies is micro thongs!

Seriously, I suppose that the beating these trees will take in a hurricane situation might be exacerbated with excessive thinning like this and to do this to a tree that has lived it's life to this point without that severe of pruning would be damaging. But, if as you say, you will be back next year, and this has been a regular yearly thing, then the tree may have acclimated to this yearly condition and will be ok. Thoughts from others?

It hurt my heart to cut that tree but it has been done many times, however not by me. These HO down here don't look at trees the same way as you and I. These are just ornaments in their space which when it interferes with their want's ( ie their vista's ) down they go or lion-tailing. I wish I could say no but the economy is getting hit hard and I really need the work, maybe lame to some but sand and surf ain't paying the bills. P,s last year a tropical storm wiped out tons of trees took 2 months to clean up the mess. That tree survived but not 4 other previously topped trees. Down they came and they were way bigger. Weak branch structure was the main cause. Paul. Here's a beach scene taken this afternoon, sorry no girls in g-stings just me and my 5 month old son.

swingdude. we do this to monkey pod trees here once a year. people like that "umbrella canopy look" and even though sometimes we do work that goes against our code of conduct we need to please the customers. i know what its like living on a small island. every little bit helps pay the bills. i have been forced to mow lawns and trim hedges because of our current economical crisis. you will be ok if you can get what the home owner wants but try to stick to the arborist code as much as possible.

I want to live there

I've done some tree work in Cozumel Mexico, and I can definitely say that the tropical trees resprout better and are better built to handle wind events than here in the Northeast. Severe lion tailing is never good, but from what I can see, you didn't destroy that tree, just a little excessive raise and thin. Better than removing it.

Yeah Grover that house is right next door to Cliff Richards's ( from the Stones )house which is up for sale. Rumors are he wants to downsize. Hah these guys NEVER downsize. The rich are quite an anomaly. I am just a plain old working joe, would never understand wealth. Hope the weather is nice and cold for my visit soon, too much heat ain't good for the body. Paul.

Yesterday I was skating through ice covered Red Oaks, Beech and Sugr in north Waterloo and today was pretty nice and cold. Almost ready to pee on my hands to get the freeze out of em.
Grounds not frozen. 3 more mths and things will warm up again.

Try talkin them into more architctural pruning with windows pruned into the canopy.
We get the same thing here and its pretty easy to talk them out of it, just gotta speak their language.

Use words like architecture, artistic, accentuate the horizontal lines, Bonsai type, living art. Use your imagination. It doesn't have to get flowerey but it works so you feel good about the prune and the HO gets what they think they want/what you sell them.

I'll trade ya your mundane for some cold rain and snow.

Tom I was grumbling and begging to leave more of the left and right lower branches but they were'nt having none of it. Tropical trees have a year round growing season and grow extemely fast. Here we spend our days keeping back the rapid growth, thank God that most HO are not willing to pay removal costs, otherwise a lot of trees would have short lives. Very sad sometimes. They have never heard of photosynthesis ( if you can believe that) or bark scorching. Can be a real downer explaining it, more like moving toward futility. Paul.
