Rayco rc6dv chipper reviews or suggest another brand / model in Same Size class

I am considering purchasing a used Rayco rc6dv ... Looking for input / reviews of current or previous owners of this unit.. I am NOT looking for reasons or advice to get a bigger chipper as I have reasons for wanting this compact size. Mainly looking for comments on the Rayco rc6dv chipper's durability and its usefulness in chipping branches in the 4 to 5 inch diameter range, including harder wood such as Oak..... OR ....... suggestions on another brand and model of chipper in THIS SIZE CLASS thanks..

Welcome to TreeBuzz Arboristjoe. I only see Rayco's specs on their current 6 inch machine which gives a 27 horse and 37 horse option. That machine looks fine enough with the bigger engine accept for how much people that have used machines with 6×6 feed openings (Vermeer 6 inch chipper) complain about them. I have an older Bandit 6 inch with a 6inch by 12inch feed opening and that performs well for the weight and size.

The one best piece of advice I can give you is run some brush similar to what you want the machine to ultimately do through it, at least a full pickup load. Include some of the bigger wood you anticipate and some spreading branches.

Thanks Merle,

that is sound advice .. What model and so on is your older Bandit 6 inch with a 6inch by 12inch feed opening ??? That way I can look up some specs to be sure my truck can pull it and that it is small enough for my goals ...

much appreciated,
Joe

80%-85% capacity on hard wood is asking a lot, if it's chipping that all day. Auto reverse?

6x6" sucks

Might be a Brush Bandit 65, with a 6x12 throat.

Bandit 65AW. 38 hp Wisconsin engine, right at same weight the new Rayco was spect at with 38 horse.

I've rented a 27 horse chipper that was new and sharp. A lot more personal effort feeding the brush through compared to the bigger engine.

I second the Bandit, my dealer had one that they would lend out and it was surprising how well it worked. I was considering buying it for a spare but some one beat me to it. It won't win any speed competitions but it ran without complaint. You will appreciate the extra width in the opening as well.

65AW was the older model of the 65. Mine was from 2000 or 2002 and it had thinner metal on the feed table and other parts. The newer 65 XP is right at the same weight I believe because the newer engines are lighter that the older Wisconsins.

thanks Merle......................... do you know when they stopped making the 65aw ?? I am most definitely in the market for a used model and not a New one :) ..... and I have learned to go for 35 hp engine vs 25 hp from this and other places I sought advice.. cheers...........joe

YW, not sure of model switch over date. Lots of used 65XPs around.

If your going to use it a bunch the older AW's metal cracks in stress points over time. Google weight of AW and XP both with 35 to 40 horse motor. I would get the XP.
